Sometimes—but wearing smart glasses and recording with them are different issues. Whether you can wear them depends on the country, the device’s features, the setting, and the rules set by the employer or property owner. In the UK, government statements say people may lawfully use smart glasses in public spaces, but harmful recording can be criminal. A shop, workplace, school, or sensitive institution may also impose its own restrictions.
Start by separating wearing from recording
Putting on camera-equipped glasses does not automatically mean you are recording. But a camera, microphone, livestream, or AI feature that captures or transmits information can raise separate privacy, data-protection, consent, and policy questions. Check what the device is doing—not just whether it looks like ordinary glasses.
The legal answer also depends on where you are. The UK Government’s September 2026 statement says people may lawfully use smart glasses in public spaces, while warning that harmful non-consensual recording may amount to offences such as harassment, stalking, or voyeurism. Sharing intimate images without consent is also a crime. This UK statement is not a rule for other countries, where recording, audio-consent, data-protection, and image-sharing laws may differ. A shop or attraction open to the public can still have photography conditions. Read signs and entry terms, and ask staff or management if it is unclear whether the rules cover smart glasses or a particular feature.

Can your employer ban smart glasses?
An employer may set rules for devices at work, particularly where glasses could record meetings, customers, colleagues, students, or confidential information. Before wearing or activating them, check the staff handbook, device and confidentiality policies, and expectations for meetings. A rule may distinguish between wearing glasses and using their recording or data features.

Specific institutional policies can be stricter. The School of Visual Arts’ policy, version 2026.09.17, covers devices with recording, audio, biometric, location, or data-transmission capabilities. It prohibits covered workers from wearing or using them in specified work settings, including job duties, meetings, classrooms, and interactions with students, colleagues, or the public. The policy also provides for approved uses, exceptions, and accommodations; it is an example for that institution, not a general rule for US workplaces. School of Visual Arts smart-glasses policy

Schools should apply their privacy, personal-data, and safeguarding arrangements to camera-enabled glasses, especially where children may be recorded. UK Department for Education guidance says existing image and CCTV guidance remains relevant to wearable technology, and policies should account for staff, parents, carers, and visitors. Department for Education: Data protection and privacy in schools
Other institutions may require permission even where recording might otherwise be lawful. The House of Lords states that recording on its estate is not permitted without appropriate authorisation and has described a review of its smart-glasses policy. Quick Recap
Check these points before wearing or recording
- Jurisdiction: Identify the country and local rules; a UK statement does not settle the law elsewhere.
- Who controls the space: Check the venue’s posted rules or the employer’s or school’s policy.
- What the glasses do: Distinguish wearing them from activating the camera, microphone, livestream, or AI and data features.
- Who or what could be captured: Use extra caution around children, personal data, meetings, health settings, and confidential discussions.
- What to do if someone objects: Stop recording and ask the responsible staff member about the applicable policy.
- Accessibility needs: If you need the glasses for accessibility or another accommodation, ask the employer or institution about its accommodation process rather than assuming a blanket ban applies.
