Yes. Download eligible shows or movies in the Netflix app before you travel, then play them from the same device during the flight. Once the download, setup, and login are complete, Netflix says playback does not require an internet connection. Inflight streaming is a separate matter: airline Wi-Fi may restrict video, and support varies by airline, aircraft, and route.
How to watch Netflix on a plane without Wi-Fi
- While connected to the internet, update the Netflix app and sign in on the phone, tablet, or other supported device you plan to bring.
- Find a show or movie with a download option. Netflix does not make every title downloadable.
- Download the title, preferably over Wi-Fi to avoid using mobile data. Before leaving, open Downloads and start playback while still online to check that the file and account are ready.
- Keep the download on the device that saved it. Netflix downloads are device-specific; they do not transfer to another phone or tablet. Any Netflix profile on that same device can view its downloads.
- On the flight, open Netflix’s Downloads section and play the saved title. Offline playback works after the initial download, setup, and login are complete.
Netflix’s offline-play guidance says an internet connection is not required after those initial steps. Airplane mode is compatible with offline playback. If you want to connect to onboard Wi-Fi for other online services, follow the airline’s directions; commonly, you turn on airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi to connect.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store among devices that can download titles, provided they run a supported version of the Netflix app. Older operating-system versions may not support downloads. Check Netflix’s device and download guidance for current compatibility before relying on a device for a long flight.
Downloads require the Netflix app and remain tied to the device used to save them. A phone can work just as well as a tablet for offline viewing; a larger screen is a matter of preference, not a requirement.

Download counts, device caps, and expiring titles
Netflix’s download rules vary by plan and can change, so check the current details for your account before travel. Its help page currently describes these limits:
| Plan type | Published download limit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ad-free plans | Up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, subject to the number of devices included in the plan. | The number of devices that can hold downloads is also limited by the plan. |
| Ad-supported plans | 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. | This is a monthly device limit, not a promise that 15 items can all be downloaded at once without other restrictions. |
These are Netflix’s published plan rules, not permanent limits. See the download help page and download-device management guidance for the latest terms. If you reach the device cap, Netflix says you can check Manage Download Devices and remove downloads or device access as needed.

Downloads may expire
Some downloaded titles expire, but Netflix does not give one universal expiry period for all titles in its download instructions. Licensing restrictions can also limit how many times a particular title can be downloaded in a year. If Netflix will not let you download a title again, its guidance is to stream it while connected or choose another title. Delete watched downloads to free storage. Check the title in the app before departure rather than assuming it will remain available for the whole trip.

| Option | Internet needed during playback? | Availability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix download | No, after the initial download, setup, and login. | Requires a downloadable title, compatible app and device, and enough storage. The download stays on the device that saved it. |
| Airline-provided entertainment | Not necessarily; some systems deliver content over an onboard local network or to a seatback screen. | Depends on the airline, aircraft, and flight. The catalog is the airline’s, not your Netflix library. |
| Netflix streaming over inflight Wi-Fi | Yes. | Requires working onboard internet and permission to use streaming apps. Neither is guaranteed. |
Airline policies demonstrate why buying or receiving Wi-Fi does not guarantee Netflix will stream. Southwest says it may prohibit access to certain high-bandwidth applications and offers Wi-Fi only on designated Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft. Qantas says Netflix and other streaming platforms are available on select routes with inflight Wi-Fi. Singapore Airlines says its inflight Wi-Fi does not support Netflix and other listed streaming apps. These are examples of differing policies, not guarantees for every flight on those carriers.

Airline entertainment can be a useful fallback, but check the operating airline’s current information for your itinerary: onboard equipment and availability can differ by aircraft and route. For example, American Airlines says its own library of movies and TV can be streamed to personal devices on most flights without buying Wi-Fi. That is American’s entertainment catalog, not Netflix. American also notes that entertainment may not be available until the aircraft reaches 10,000 feet, and passengers must follow crew directions about device use and stowage during takeoff and landing.
