Yes, sometimes—in 2D. Some Blu-ray 3D discs can play their 2D-compatible content on an ordinary Blu-ray setup, while some packages include a separate standard Blu-ray disc. Neither option means a regular TV and player can show the movie in stereoscopic 3D. Compatibility depends on the exact disc, package edition, and player model.
What “no special player or TV” actually means
There are two different ways to watch a 3D-branded release on ordinary equipment: play 2D-compatible content from a 3D disc, if the disc and player support it, or use a separate standard Blu-ray disc included in the package. A package containing a second 2D disc is not the same thing as a 3D disc that a regular player can read in 2D.

The Blu-ray Disc Association’s September 4, 2009 announcement described backward compatibility as part of the planned 3D specification: 3D discs would include a 2D version viewable on existing 2D players. That historical format statement is not a guarantee for every later title or player. Check the disc packaging and the manual for your exact player model. These releases illustrate different ways 3D and 2D content may be packaged. The cited sources establish edition details, not current stock or compatibility with every ordinary player. Confirm the exact edition and its contents before buying.

| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), Japan | Paramount Japan lists a two-disc “3D & 2D Blu-ray” set, product PPCM 136699, and says a 3D player and television are required for the 3D version. | The package explicitly identifies both 3D and 2D Blu-ray. How to choose the right version for your setup
If you want to watch in 2D
- Identify the complete model number of your Blu-ray player and consult its manual or manufacturer support page for 3D-disc playback.
- Check the exact edition’s packaging or listing. Look for a separately listed standard Blu-ray disc if you want the most straightforward 2D option.
- If the package has only a 3D disc, confirm that your player supports that disc’s 2D playback rather than inferring compatibility from the 3D label.
Support is model-specific. Sony’s answer to whether a Blu-ray player can play 3D discs applies to the player covered by that support page, not to every Sony model. Sony’s BDP-S6700 product page, for example, lists Blu-ray 3D capability. Sony support: Can the Blu-ray Disc player play back 3D discs? Sony BDP-S6700 product page
Philips says ordinary Blu-ray discs play in 2D on the Blu-ray 3D/3D Ready player models covered by its support article. That does not establish whether a particular 3D disc will play in a different standard player. Philips Support: normal Blu-ray discs on listed Philips 3D players

- Spider-Man [Tom Holland] begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark.
If you want to see the movie in 3D
A standard TV and player are not enough for stereoscopic playback. Philips’ instructions for the models covered require a 3D-capable player and display, an HDMI connection, and glasses compatible with the display. Check the manuals for your specific equipment; generic red-and-blue glasses are not a substitute for the glasses system it supports. Philips: Play a Blu-ray 3D video

Before buying an older or international edition
- Verify the full title and edition name, not just the film title or a seller’s “3D” label.
- Confirm whether the package contains one 3D disc with potential 2D playback or a distinct standard Blu-ray disc.
- For international releases, check region compatibility, language, and subtitle options before purchase.
- Treat historical announcements and release reports as evidence of what an edition contained, not proof that it is currently available.
