You can wash salad greens ahead, but there is no dependable household rule saying washed greens will stay fresh or safe for seven days. Rinse loose, unwashed greens under running water, dry them well, and refrigerate them at 40°F (4°C) or below. Greens labeled “pre-washed” or “ready-to-eat” can be used without rewashing.
How to wash and store loose greens
- Prepare a clean workspace. Wash your hands and clean the sink, colander, utensils, and work surface. Keep greens away from raw meat, poultry, seafood, and their juices.
- Rinse the greens. Run unwashed greens under tap water. Do not use soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash.
- Dry them thoroughly. Use a clean cloth or paper towel. A salad spinner is an optional convenience, not a safety requirement.
- Refrigerate promptly. Store perishable greens in a clean refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. Keep prepared or cut salad cold and refrigerate it promptly.
What to do with packaged, ready-to-eat greens
If the package says “pre-washed” or “ready-to-eat,” follow its directions and do not wash the greens again. Rewashing can expose them to germs from a sink, hands, or utensils that are not clean. Keep the package refrigerated and prevent contact with raw foods.
Why a full week is not guaranteed
Official consumer guidance supports cold storage and careful handling, but does not establish a universal number of days that washed greens will remain fresh or safe at home. The type and condition of the greens and how they are handled can vary, so do not treat seven days as a general household guarantee.

Washing does not make contaminated greens safe
Rinsing can reduce bacteria, but it cannot eliminate them or reliably fix contaminated produce. USDA Agricultural Research Service food technologist Yaguang Luo cautions about bagged lettuce: “Also remember that if the bagged lettuce is already contaminated with pathogenic E.coli, simply washing it at home is not effective.”
