Windows Command Prompt can run built-in Windows commands and batch files, so many routine command-line tasks do not require PowerShell. But CMD cannot run PowerShell cmdlets, and Microsoft recommends PowerShell for the most robust, up-to-date Windows automation. That is the practical limit behind the idea of using only CMD: it is capable for routine work, but it is not a universal replacement for every Windows shell or automation workflow.
What Command Prompt can do
CMD is the command interpreter launched by cmd.exe. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10, Windows 11, and specified Windows Server versions. It runs Windows Commands and batch files, which can automate sequences of commands. The Windows Commands reference catalogs the built-in commands.
For a new CMD process, /c runs a command and exits, while /k runs a command and leaves the interpreter open. The /d option disables AutoRun commands for that process. File and directory name completion can be enabled for an instance with /f:on; Microsoft also documents registry settings for configuring completion. These options are documented in the CMD command reference.
CMD also has environment variables. Use set to view or change them, and write %NAME% in a command or batch file to substitute a variable’s value. A new CMD process inherits its environment from its parent; changes made inside that process do not alter the parent’s environment. Microsoft documents an 8,192-byte maximum for an individual environment variable and a 65,536-character limit for the process environment.

Where CMD becomes fiddly
Quoting paths and special characters
Paths containing spaces generally need double quotes. Characters such as &, |, and parentheses also have special meaning to CMD in relevant contexts: & can separate commands, and | creates a pipeline. When these characters occur in a path or value, quoting and escaping matter. A command that combines paths, operators, or nested parentheses can therefore be harder to compose safely than a simple command that runs on its own.
Command-line length limits
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes an 8,191-character limit for command strings and certain environment-variable cases. The guidance includes historical applicability notes for older Windows releases, so treat the figure as a documented limit in that context—not as a guarantee that every current Windows configuration will behave identically. Environment scope
Because a child CMD process receives its environment from its parent, changing a variable inside that process is not a way to update the environment of the application that launched it. This distinction matters when a command or script appears to set a value successfully but another already-running program cannot see the change.

Both are Windows command-line shells, but they accept different command languages. CMD runs Windows Commands and batch scripts; it does not run PowerShell cmdlets as native CMD commands. PowerShell can run Windows Commands as well as its own cmdlets, and was designed to extend Command shell capabilities with a more extensible scripting language. Microsoft recommends PowerShell rather than Windows Commands or Windows Script Host for the most robust, up-to-date Windows automation.

For ordinary command execution or an existing batch script, CMD may be sufficient. If the task depends on a PowerShell cmdlet, CMD cannot run it directly. For more involved automation, Microsoft’s recommendation favors PowerShell; the better fit for a particular routine workflow depends on the commands and scripts it uses. Can you use Windows without PowerShell?
Yes. You can use CMD for Windows Commands and batch scripts without using PowerShell. That does not mean CMD can perform every task available through PowerShell: cmdlets require PowerShell, and Microsoft points to PowerShell for the most robust, up-to-date automation. The right question is whether your specific commands and scripts are supported by CMD, not whether one shell can replace the other in every situation.

CMD is not the same as Windows Terminal
Windows Terminal is an application that hosts console windows; CMD is a command interpreter that can run inside it. Microsoft Support describes Windows Terminal becoming the default host for console windows in the Windows 11 22H2-era change following the October 2022 update. That change did not turn CMD into PowerShell or remove the distinction between the host application and the shell. What a week using only CMD can—and cannot—show
A week-long experiment can reveal how well CMD fits one person’s routine, but its specific breakages, workarounds, and time costs are firsthand observations—not facts established by Microsoft’s command documentation. The documented friction points to watch are quoting around spaces and special characters, the scope of environment-variable changes, and whether a needed command is actually a PowerShell cmdlet. Without the author’s own notes, it would be misleading to claim that a particular task failed or that the week was faster or slower.
