Yes, but VLC alone is not established as a turnkey way to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. VLC can play and process media; YouTube’s documented workflow uses an encoder configured with the event’s server URL and stream key. On Windows, use VLC as the playback source if you need it, and let a YouTube-capable encoder send that video to YouTube.

What VLC can—and cannot—do in this workflow

VLC’s stream-output chain can process files it can read and send output over a network. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation describes network output using std and encoding with transcode (VideoLAN streaming documentation). YouTube’s documented encoder workflow, by contrast, asks you to provide an encoder with the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room (YouTube: Get started with live streaming).

Those capabilities make VLC useful as a playback or media-processing source, but the cited documentation does not establish VLC by itself as a simple, supported YouTube Live encoder. The practical setup is to use an encoder that can send to YouTube, with either the video file loaded directly into that encoder or VLC playback routed to it. The exact routing steps depend on the encoder you choose.

Choose how to provide the prerecorded video

Option How it works Best fit Trade-off
Encoder’s built-in media source Load the local file in the encoder, then send the encoder output to YouTube. You want source and broadcast controls in one application. File playback, playlist, and looping controls vary by encoder.
VLC plus a YouTube-capable encoder VLC plays or processes the file; the encoder takes that output and sends it to YouTube using the event URL and key. You already use VLC or need its playback and playlist behavior. You must configure a working handoff from VLC to the encoder.

For either route, check whether the encoder supports RTMPS, offers a preview, and provides the playback or scheduling controls you need. No specific Windows encoder compatibility or performance comparison is established here.

Set up a Windows prerecorded-video stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. Confirm live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel and that no active restriction prevents you from going live.
  2. Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key for that event. YouTube’s controls can vary with the event workflow and interface.
  3. Configure the encoder. In your YouTube-capable Windows encoder, select YouTube as the service if available. Otherwise, enter the server URL and stream key manually. Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room when the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection (YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
  4. Add the video source. Load the prerecorded file in the encoder, or play it in VLC and route VLC’s output into the encoder using that encoder’s supported source-capture method. VLC’s stream-output documentation confirms it can process readable files and send network output, but it does not prescribe a particular capture or routing setup for a separate Windows encoder.
  5. Match output settings to the video and your connection. Choose an output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and available upload capacity. Select a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; YouTube’s recommendations are not interchangeable across these combinations.
  6. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that both video and audio are present and that the picture is stable before starting the public event. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health (YouTube encoder settings and testing guidance).
  7. Start and end the event deliberately. Start the event through the encoder and Live Control Room workflow. When finished, stop the encoder and confirm in Live Control Room that the event has ended.

YouTube encoder settings to check

YouTube publishes recommendations rather than universal settings. Use the row that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s current published H.264 guidance, not independent measurements.

Output format YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p, 30 fps, H.264 2 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps, H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate mode: For RTMP/RTMPS guidance, use constant bitrate (CBR) if the encoder exposes that setting.
  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS when available and use the URL shown for the event in Live Control Room.

See YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for other formats and codecs. The settings may change, so consult that page when configuring a stream.

Protect the stream key and check content rights

Keep the key private

YouTube treats a stream key like a password and address for the stream. Do not post it, include it in a public recording, or share screenshots that reveal it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement key (YouTube live-stream setup guidance).

Use video and audio you have the right to stream

Playing a file through VLC does not change its copyright status. Before broadcasting, make sure you have permission to use the video, music, and other material in it. YouTube may apply its copyright and monetization policies to live content; do not assume that a prerecorded file is exempt. Follow YouTube’s applicable copyright guidance and check channel eligibility and restrictions before scheduling an event.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube shows no incoming signal: Confirm the encoder is running, the event’s current server URL and key are entered correctly, and the selected RTMPS endpoint is supported by the encoder. If the key was reset, replace the old one.
  • The preview is black or has no audio: Check that the file plays in VLC or the encoder’s media source, that the correct source is selected, and that the encoder is receiving both picture and audio before going live.
  • The stream buffers or loses quality: Check that sustained upload capacity can support the selected bitrate. Lower the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if needed, then test again.
  • The event cannot start: Verify live streaming is enabled for the channel, there is no active restriction, and the intended event is open in Live Control Room. Confirm the encoder is sending to that event’s details.
  • VLC plays the file but the encoder receives nothing: VLC playback is not automatically an encoder input. Use the encoder’s supported capture or media-source method, or load the file directly in the encoder instead.
