Only use automotive grease on a firearm if the exact firearm’s owner’s manual permits grease at the specific lubrication point. There is no established, universal compatibility between automotive grease and firearms. The manual also determines how much to apply: excess lubricant can affect performance, and some models prohibit lubricant on particular parts.
Why the answer depends on your firearm
Lubrication guidance varies by model and by component. GLOCK tells owners to consult the owner’s manual for lubrication points and amounts, and warns that too much lubricant can affect pistol performance. See GLOCK’s care guidance.
Some model-specific instructions are more restrictive. Springfield Armory manual snippets for the XD-S and Echelon say not to apply oil or grease to the striker. That warning applies to those models; it should not be generalized to every firearm. Likewise, permission in one firearm’s manual does not establish permission for another. Consult the Springfield Armory owner’s manuals for the exact model’s instructions.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that automotive grease is compatible across firearm designs, materials, seals, or operating conditions. That is why the product’s automotive labeling alone is not enough to make it a suitable substitute.

How to decide whether a grease is suitable
- Identify the exact firearm and component. Find the make and model, then locate the manual’s lubrication instructions for the part you intend to lubricate.
- Check whether the manual permits grease. If it specifies oil, prohibits lubrication, or does not make clear that grease is appropriate, do not substitute automotive grease on your own.
- Follow the specified amount and method. More lubricant is not automatically better; GLOCK warns that over-lubrication can affect pistol performance.
- If the instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified armorer. Do this before substituting an automotive product.
When firearm-specific grease may make sense
If the manual calls for grease, a product explicitly identified by its maker for firearm use is a more relevant category to consider than automotive grease, but it still is not automatically right for every firearm. For example, Fluoramics describes Tufoil Gun Grease for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and lists possible uses such as rifle bolts, automatic slide rails, triggers, and metal-to-metal contact. Its instructions still say to apply a small amount where the firearm manufacturer recommends grease.
Other firearm-lubricant instructions also remain product-specific. FrogLube’s instructions emphasize following the firearm manufacturer’s directions for lubricating the action and avoiding over-lubrication. Neither product’s instructions establish that automotive grease is interchangeable with firearm lubricant.

Maintenance intervals are model-specific too
GLOCK recommends cleaning and lubricating its pistols when new before first firing, after each time fired, at least monthly if unused, and after exposure to conditions such as rain, snow, perspiration, salt water, dirt, or dust. This is GLOCK guidance—not a schedule to apply to every make and model. Follow your own firearm’s manual for maintenance timing.

Some search results about “guns” concern industrial spray-foam equipment, not firearms. For instance, Graco’s spray-foam gun maintenance guidance discusses task-specific greases and seal compatibility for that equipment. It does not establish lubricant compatibility for firearms.
