Yes—with Larasources, a Laravel package that represents remote data through typed, model-like Sources while Origins handle the external service’s protocol. A local record can cache that data, and your application decides when to refresh it. This differs from Laravel API Resources, which shape your own Eloquent data for outgoing JSON responses.

How Larasources separates remote data from remote operations

Larasources divides an integration into three responsibilities: the Source describes the data, the Origin communicates with the remote service, and a local record holds a cached copy. That separation lets application code work with remote information in a model-like way without treating the HTTP protocol and cache policy as the same concern.

Source: define the data shape

A Source can declare fillable fields, casts, accessors, and how arguments map to the data it represents. The package walkthrough demonstrates associating a Source with an Origin using a UsesOrigin attribute.

Origin: implement the provider-specific work

The Origin contains operations such as fetch() and save(). The walkthrough shows it obtaining configuration through its config method and making HTTP requests. It also describes overriding configuration for tenant-specific credentials and routing settings such as timeouts and retries through that mechanism. These are behaviors described by package author Eduardo Lázaro, not independently tested results.

Expose a named source on a model

A model can use the HasSources trait and map a readable alias, such as weather, to a Source class. The example then accesses it with $city->source('weather').

Install and check compatibility

The author’s walkthrough describes installing the package with Composer and running Laravel’s migrations:

composer require edulazaro/larasources
php artisan migrate

The walkthrough says no package configuration file needs publishing and no environment variable is required. Confirm the installation sequence and requirements against the release you install. The author’s article states PHP 8.4+ and Laravel 12+; current Composer constraints and release status are not established here. The Packagist listing identifies the package as edulazaro/larasources, but does not establish those current details.

When cached attributes refresh—and when they do not

According to the walkthrough, reading a Source attribute uses a cached record when one exists; if there is no cached record, it requests data from the Origin. Calling fetch() explicitly requests fresh remote data and writes the returned data to the local record. Calling clear() drops that cached record.

The author says the package does not automatically expire an existing cache. Your application therefore needs to choose a refresh trigger, such as a scheduled job, a user action, or a webhook. This choice matters for list and page rendering: reading many uncached sources can make remote requests during the request. The author’s rationale is to keep freshness policy explicit rather than make a list view trigger many calls; no independent performance measurements are available.

What happens when you save remote data

The walkthrough describes save() sending data to the remote service first and updating the local cached record only after the Origin returns. Failures are described as exceptions, with trySave() offered for flows that need a non-throwing result. An OriginResult can also indicate that a remote operation is still processing asynchronously.

Because services define success differently, the Origin determines what a successful operation means for its provider. The walkthrough also describes an optional external ID, which can identify the remote object in later writes or reconciliation.

How variants and source pipelines handle more complex data

Keep multiple remote records of one type distinct

Variants can represent multiple records of the same Source type—for example, separate sale and rental listings. The walkthrough says a cache key includes the owning model, source name, and variant.

Map arguments and chain Sources

Arguments can map to model attributes or be supplied when calling the Source. The author also describes passing one Source as an argument to another, enabling a staged scrape-and-transform flow without copying one record’s payload into another.

Attach a Source after ingestion

A Source can be created before a local model exists: fetch remote data, create the local model, and then attach the Source. This can suit scraping or ingestion workflows where remote data arrives before the application’s own model.

Credentials and tests

For a multi-tenant integration, the walkthrough describes storing credentials with the integration that owns them and overriding the Origin’s configuration method to retrieve them. A static configuration is another option for a single-tenant setup. Where and how credentials are stored remains an application security decision.

The walkthrough also shows mocking a Source on a model in tests so the test does not call the Origin. That provides a seam for testing model behavior without a live external request.

Larasources versus Laravel API Resources

These features address different directions of data flow, despite the similar names. Laravel’s official Eloquent: API Resources documentation describes API Resources as a transformation layer between Eloquent models and JSON responses. A JsonResource defines a toArray representation; resources can also handle relationships, collections, response metadata, and JSON:API serialization.

Question Larasources Laravel API Resources
What does it represent? Remote data and its locally cached state, through Sources and Origins. Your application’s Eloquent models and collections as JSON responses.
What is its main responsibility? Organizing remote operations and cached data. Transforming model data into an outgoing representation.
Who controls freshness? The consuming application chooses when to refresh the cache, according to the package walkthrough. Not its purpose; it defines response serialization.

Use API Resources when the problem is how to present your application’s data to an API consumer. Consider Larasources when the problem is how to represent and synchronize data from an external service. They are not substitutes, and an application can use each for its respective job.
