For a routine Samsung Galaxy software update, use Settings or Samsung Smart Switch—not a generic ADB command. ADB connects a computer to an Android device for development and other device-management tasks, but enabling USB debugging does not make downloaded Samsung firmware installable. Android recovery also verifies an OTA package’s signature during sideloading.
Can you use ADB to apply a Samsung update?
ADB is a command-line tool for communicating with Android devices, distributed as part of Android SDK Platform Tools. It can establish a connection to a Galaxy device, but that connection alone does not provide a general method for installing Samsung firmware. Samsung’s general Galaxy update instructions document updates through the device’s Settings menu or Smart Switch; they do not give a universal ADB firmware-sideload command. Android Developers’ ADB documentation explains the tool and connection process, while Samsung’s update instructions describe its supported routine paths.
ADB is also not a way around Android’s update-package security checks. The Android Open Source Project explains that recovery verifies an OTA package’s signature even when it is sideloaded: “Sideloading does not bypass recovery’s normal package signature verification mechanism—before installing a package, recovery will verify that it is signed with one of the private keys matching the public keys stored in the recovery partition, just as it would for a package delivered over-the-air.” This describes Android OTA signing generally; it does not establish that a particular package is compatible with a Samsung model, region, or carrier. For that reason, do not treat adb sideload update.zip as a universal Samsung update command, or assume a firmware package for a different model or carrier will work. If you need to check whether an update is available for your device, use its update screen or consult the relevant carrier’s release information.

Update your Galaxy from Settings
- Open Settings and tap Software update or System updates. The label depends on the model and software version.
- Choose the available option to check for, download, or install an update, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the device available to finish installation. You cannot use it during installation, including to make calls, so start when you can leave it undisturbed.
Some carriers may require Wi-Fi to check for or install updates. Menu names, screens, and update availability vary by device, software version, and carrier. Samsung’s Galaxy update guide covers the on-device process and these variations.
Update with Samsung Smart Switch on a computer
Smart Switch is Samsung’s computer-based option for a routine update. It requires a Windows PC or Mac, a USB connection, and an update offer for the connected device. Samsung recommends using the cable supplied with the device; some computers may need a USB adapter. You do not need to buy another cable if you already have a working data cable with compatible connectors.

- Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the computer using a USB cable. If prompted, allow the connection on the device.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, select Update and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the process finishes and the phone or tablet reboots.
Smart Switch offers an update only when one is available for that particular device. Samsung’s update instructions provide its current steps.

Retry after a connection interruption
Samsung says an interrupted connection can cause an update to fail. Reconnect the device and try the update again. For a Smart Switch update, make sure the USB cable remains connected through the process.

Use Smart Switch emergency recovery if needed
For an update interruption or device error, Samsung describes an emergency software recovery process in Smart Switch. Recovery on another computer includes a factory data reset. Samsung also says a recovery code can be retrieved only on the computer where the update failed. Follow Samsung’s recovery instructions for the affected device.
Back up important files before any factory reset. Samsung warns that stored data may be lost during recovery. See Samsung’s update and recovery instructions for the process and its data-loss warning.

What enabling ADB actually does
To connect over USB with ADB, you must enable USB debugging in Developer options. On Android 4.2.2/API 17 and later, the device displays an RSA authorization prompt; unlock the device and approve the computer before it can run debugging commands. Use adb devices to check whether the connection is established. These steps explain ADB access, not how to install Samsung firmware.
