A photo or screenshot of a physical ID is not a dependable way to buy alcohol. Some jurisdictions expressly reject it. An official digital ID may work only where local rules recognize that credential, the store has the required verification method, and the retailer chooses to accept it. A photo of your card is not the same as an issuer-verified digital credential. Check local rules and store policy, and bring your physical ID as a fallback.
Can I use a picture of my ID to buy alcohol?
Do not assume a picture or screenshot of your driver’s license or other physical ID will be accepted. It reproduces an image of a card, but does not itself verify that the underlying credential is valid or belongs to you. Georgia’s alcohol-retailer guidance says screenshots or photos of its mobile driver’s license are not acceptable; Western Australia likewise says photos or screenshots of physical ID are not accepted.
Saving a picture in your phone gallery or wallet does not turn it into an official digital ID. Rules depend on the jurisdiction and may also differ by type of alcohol sale.

Can I show my digital driver’s license at a liquor store?
Possibly, if it is an issuer-provided digital credential and local rules recognize it. An official app or wallet credential can be checked using a specified reader, app, or certified service; a stored image generally cannot substitute for that process. Even where digital ID is permitted, the retailer may not be required to accept it.

Does the store have to accept a digital ID?
Not necessarily. Illinois says licensees do not have to accept Mobile IDs, and the UK government says businesses in England and Wales are not required to adopt certified digital proof of age. A retailer may also apply a stricter company policy than the legal minimum. California ABC’s guidance explains the elements of bona fide identification and notes that businesses may set stricter policies; it does not create a general right to use a digital photo. Why the rules can depend on the sale
Some laws specify what a seller must do to verify age in particular transactions without establishing that a screenshot or any particular digital wallet credential must be accepted. For example, Texas guidance covers specified sales for off-premises consumption and requires the seller to visually inspect and scan identification or enter its information into an electronic reader; if internet access prevents scanning or entry, the guidance calls for visual inspection. Texas statutory text sets out the covered transaction types and exceptions. This is a seller-verification example, not proof that a photo or digital wallet credential is accepted. - Confirm your location’s rule. Look for guidance from the relevant alcohol regulator or government authority; rules in one state or territory do not establish rules elsewhere.
- Check that your credential is the recognized one. Confirm it is issued through an approved government or identity-provider process, rather than a photograph of a physical card.
- Ask how the store verifies it. The location may need a particular reader, app, or certified verification process.
- Ask whether the retailer accepts it. Permission under local rules does not always mean every retailer must participate.
- Bring physical ID if available. It avoids relying on a credential or verification method the retailer cannot or will not use.
Because the title does not specify a country, state, or territory, no single answer applies everywhere. The examples above are jurisdiction-specific and are not an exhaustive list; confirm current local requirements and the chosen retailer’s policy.
