Yes, you can use a local account on a Windows 11 Home PC after setup. The key distinction is timing: Microsoft’s published requirements say Windows 11 Home setup requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account, while Microsoft separately documents how to switch an existing sign-in to a local account from Settings after setup.
Why Windows 11 Home local-account advice seems contradictory
The two claims describe different stages. Microsoft lists an internet connection and a Microsoft account as requirements for the initial setup of Windows 11 Home. Its separate account-switching instructions describe a change you can make after Windows is set up. The post-setup option does not establish that a local account is available in the initial setup flow.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements page states the Home setup requirement. The account-conversion route is documented in Microsoft’s account-switching instructions. Microsoft’s pages reviewed on October 7, 2026, do not state publication dates; requirements and Settings labels can change.

A local account is created for one device. Microsoft says it does not require internet connectivity to sign in. A Microsoft account uses an email address and password across Microsoft services and can sync settings and files between devices. Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account, citing service integration, security, and sync benefits.

| Consideration | Local account | Microsoft account |
|---|---|---|
| Account scope | Created on and associated with one device. | Used with Microsoft services and across devices. |
| Sign-in without internet | Microsoft says internet connectivity is not required to sign in. | Microsoft’s comparison does not establish the same claim for this account type. |
| Sync and services | Does not provide the Microsoft-account syncing described by Microsoft. | Can sync settings and files between devices and integrates with Microsoft services. |
| Password recovery | Recovery may rely on security questions, another administrator account, or a reset disk; without an available administrator account, a device reset may be required. | Uses Microsoft-account recovery rather than the local-account reset-disk option. |
Microsoft’s account comparison states: “A local account is created on the device and doesn’t require Internet connectivity to sign in.” This is a practical difference, not by itself a broad privacy-versus-security verdict.
Switch from a Microsoft account to a local account
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Select Sign in with a local account instead.
- Follow the prompts to choose a username and password, then complete the sign-out steps.
Microsoft says the new username must be different from other usernames on the device. The exact label can vary with configuration or future Windows updates.

Plan for a forgotten local-account password
Microsoft documents several recovery paths, but which one works depends on what was set up beforehand and whether another administrator account is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Security questions: Answer the questions configured when the local account was created.
- Another administrator account: If you can sign in to a different administrator account on the PC, use it to reset the local password.
- Password reset disk: Microsoft’s reset-disk instructions apply to local accounts, not Microsoft accounts. Create the disk on a USB flash drive from Control Panel while signed in to the local account, then remove the USB drive and store it safely.
- No recovery route available: If no administrator account is available, Microsoft says you may need to reset the device.

Which account should you choose?
- Choose a local account if you want a device-specific sign-in and understand that password recovery may be more limited.
- Choose a Microsoft account if you want the syncing and integration Microsoft describes across its services and devices.
You can also use Windows Hello sign-in methods; Microsoft lists these in its Sign-In Options in Windows documentation. That is separate from whether the Windows user account is local or linked to a Microsoft account.
