For safety, do not use a karaoke microphone while the vehicle is moving. A mount or hands-free connection does not remove the distraction of singing, speaking, or attending to entertainment. Whether a particular use is illegal depends on the current law where you are driving; there is no universal rule specifically about karaoke microphones.
Why using a karaoke microphone can distract you
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says distracted driving includes talking to people in the vehicle and adjusting the stereo, entertainment, or navigation system—anything that takes attention away from safe driving. Its 2026 safe-driving guidance says driving requires full attention.
Applying that general guidance to a karaoke microphone is a safety inference: speaking or singing, listening to entertainment, or handling the microphone may compete with attention to the road. The available sources do not report a karaoke-specific crash study or test, so they do not establish a precise risk estimate for microphones.

Does mounting or using a hands-free microphone make it safe?
No. A mount may reduce the need to hold or reposition the microphone, but it does not establish that singing or speaking while driving is safe. The driver may still be mentally occupied by the performance or entertainment. NHTSA’s distraction guidance includes conversation and entertainment-system activity, not only handheld-device use.

If a passenger controls the entertainment equipment, that may avoid the driver adjusting it, but the driver should still keep attention on driving rather than joining in. This is a practical application of NHTSA’s general guidance, not product-specific testing.
Is it illegal to use a karaoke microphone while driving?
There is no jurisdiction-independent yes-or-no answer in the available sources. Laws differ by state and may cover handheld devices, electronic devices, or distracted driving more broadly. Whether a microphone falls under a particular law depends on its wording and the circumstances. Check the current state and local rules for the place you are driving; the NHTSA law resource is not a current 50-state survey of karaoke microphones.

NHTSA’s cell-phone law resource reports that, as of November 2021, handheld cell-phone talking was prohibited in 24 states, while texting by all drivers was prohibited in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Those are historical counts about phones and texting—not current counts and not rules specifically about karaoke microphones.

- Set up entertainment before moving. Choose audio and make any needed adjustments while parked in a safe location.
- Keep the microphone unused while driving. Do not handle it, sing into it, or adjust connected equipment while the vehicle is moving.
- Pull over safely before changing anything. If the microphone or entertainment needs attention, stop in a safe, legal place before using it.
- Check local law for legal questions. Consult current rules for each state or locality on your route, rather than assuming a mount, Bluetooth connection, or voice operation is permitted.
What NHTSA’s phone-use figures do—and do not—show
NHTSA’s Countermeasures That Work resource cites a 2021 observation survey in which 2.5% of drivers on the road at a given moment were talking on a handheld cell phone. It also cites an estimate that 7.6% of drivers were using some type of phone in a typical daylight moment. These figures describe phone use, not karaoke microphones, and should not be used to estimate microphone-related risk.
