Yes. A Chromebook can handle many tasks offline, but only when the app supports offline use and you have prepared the files or settings while connected. Locally saved files are the most dependable fallback; ordinary websites and cloud services that need live data will not work simply because you are using a Chromebook.
What you can do on a Chromebook offline
Google lists Gmail, Keep, Docs, Sheets, Slides, photo editing, media, and offline-capable apps among possible offline uses. Availability depends on the specific app and whether you prepared it before disconnecting. Google’s guide, Use your Chromebook offline, also covers saved pages and other offline activities.
- Work with documents: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can work offline after setup, and selected Drive files can be made available offline.
- Handle synced email: Gmail can let you read, search, and reply to messages included in its offline sync.
- Use notes and local files: Keep notes and files already stored on the Chromebook can be available without a network.
- Use supported media or apps: Some downloaded media and apps work offline, but support varies by service and title.
Prepare Google Drive and Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Google’s instructions require an internet connection for setup. For Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline work, use Chrome or Edge, do not use private browsing, enable Drive offline, and install the Docs Offline extension. You also need enough available device storage. See Google Docs Editors Help: Work on Google Docs, Sheets and Slides offline.
- While online, open Google Drive settings and turn on offline access.
- Install the Docs Offline extension if prompted, then wait for the setup to finish.
- In Drive, mark important files or folders as available offline. Google’s Chromebook instructions explain how to use Google Drive files offline on your Chromebook.
- Wait until the files show that they are ready for offline use. Do not assume a file is synced just because it appears in Drive.
When you reconnect, changes made to supported Drive files sync. Google identifies Maps and Forms as unsupported for Drive offline, so do not rely on this setup for those services.

Set up Gmail offline
Gmail offline is configured separately from Drive and applies to an individual account. In Chrome, open Gmail settings, go to the Offline tab, enable offline mail, and choose how much message history to sync. Google’s Set up & use Gmail offline instructions cover the setup and storage requirements.
- Use Gmail in a normal Chrome window; offline Gmail does not work in Incognito.
- Open Gmail while online before disconnecting so the selected messages can sync.
- Read, search, and reply to synced messages offline. Messages sent while disconnected wait in Outbox and are sent after the Chromebook reconnects.
- Check each account you need: syncing one account does not configure others.
Gmail offline uses browser storage, so available storage can limit how much mail is kept. Work or school account policies may also affect whether the feature can be set up.

Keep files available locally
Files in the Chromebook’s Downloads folder are stored locally by default. Download documents, travel details, and other essentials before leaving coverage, then open them while still online to verify that they are usable. Google explains local file handling in Open, save, or delete files on your Chromebook.
A USB flash drive or other compatible external storage can carry files, provided the Chromebook recognizes the device and has a suitable port or adapter. Compatibility varies; check Google’s file types and external devices that work on Chromebooks guidance and test the drive before depending on it. External storage gives you access to files saved on it, not to live websites or cloud-only content.

Check storage, file formats, and account restrictions
Storage space
Offline files, downloads, and browser data use local storage. Low space can prevent downloads or settings from being saved, and some downloaded files may be deleted automatically to free room. Check storage before a trip and keep essential files in a location you have verified. Google’s free up space on your Chromebook guide describes storage management.
Microsoft Office files
Do not assume that an Office file will work normally in Microsoft 365 or Google’s editors without a connection. Google’s Chromebook guidance says Microsoft 365 and Office files cannot be opened in those editors offline, though a limited basic editor may be available in some cases. Test the exact file and application you plan to use before you go offline; see Open & edit Office files on your Chromebook.

Managed devices and Android apps
A school or employer can restrict offline features through administrator settings. Android app availability also varies by Chromebook and may be restricted on managed devices. Verify the apps and account policies you depend on while online; Google’s Chromebook Help covers connecting and entertaining with apps on Chromebook.

Offline mode is not a general replacement for internet access. Pages you have not saved and services that need current online data remain unavailable. Some features also require a supported sign-in or browser context: for example, Google identifies guest and Incognito limitations for certain offline services.
