Sometimes—but only if the manufacturer’s guidance for both your exact camera body and lens supports the conditions. “Weather-resistant” does not mean waterproof, and a rain cover adds protection without guaranteeing that water cannot get in. Check the manuals before heading out, limit exposure, and dry and inspect the equipment afterward.

Can you use a camera lens in the rain?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. It depends on the specific body and lens, their documented limits, and how heavy or prolonged the exposure is. Do not assume a camera is safe in rain simply because it is described as weather-sealed or weather-resistant.

For example, Canon describes the EOS R7 as resistant to dust and drips but warns that it is not waterproof and that dirt, dust, water, or salt may still get inside. Nikon’s Z7/Z6 guidance also says those products are not waterproof. These are model-specific cautions, not ratings for every camera.

Check the current manual or support guidance for both pieces of equipment. Olympus warns that the E-M1’s weather-proof properties cannot be assured in rain, snow, or dust when paired with a lens that is not weather-proof. A body’s protection alone therefore may not describe the protection of the complete setup.

What to check before shooting

  • Body: Find the manufacturer’s exact description of its resistance and any stated limits.
  • Lens: Check the documentation for the exact lens model; do not infer sealing from the body’s specifications.
  • Combination: Look for warnings that protection depends on using a compatible lens.
  • Conditions: Consider rain intensity and exposure duration. If the manuals do not clearly support the conditions, limit exposure rather than treating the equipment as protected.
  • Cover fit: If you plan to use a rain cover, confirm that it fits your camera and the length and configuration of your lens.

There is no supported universal numerical “weather-sealing” score for comparing unspecified camera-and-lens combinations. Use the manufacturers’ guidance for your exact equipment instead.

Should you use a camera rain cover?

A correctly sized rain cover can add a useful protective layer when you need to keep shooting outdoors. Think Tank Photo describes its Emergency Rain Cover for DSLR and mirrorless camera-and-lens combinations; the product page lists features and fit examples. Check the current size information against your own body and lens before choosing one.

How to reduce risk while shooting in rain

  • Keep exposure as brief as practical, especially when the manuals do not explicitly support the conditions.
  • Avoid changing lenses outdoors in rain if possible. If a change is necessary, Sony recommends doing it in a clean environment, preparing the replacement first, and leaving the mount opening exposed for as little time as possible. These steps reduce exposure; they do not guarantee a dry interior.
  • Keep water, dirt, and salt from accumulating on the equipment. Canon advises cleaning after use because residue may cause malfunction.
  • Use a cover that fits the camera-and-lens setup if continued shooting is necessary.

How to care for the camera and lens afterward

  1. Wipe away external moisture. Canon recommends wiping water droplets from the EOS R7 with a clean, dry cloth and cleaning the camera after use. Follow the manual for your own equipment, especially if it has been exposed to salt or dirt.
  2. Clean the lens as directed. Canon’s interchangeable-lens care guidance advises wiping droplets away and using a blower for dust. The EOS R7 manual warns against cleaners containing organic solvents on the body or lens; consult your own manual before using cleaning products.
  3. Get help if water may have entered. Canon advises promptly contacting a Canon Service Center if you suspect water entered the EOS R7. Do not disassemble equipment based on general advice.

Keep condensation separate from rain exposure

Condensation is a risk when equipment moves suddenly between cold and warm environments. Canon recommends placing the camera in a sealed plastic bag while it adjusts to the warmer temperature. Nikon likewise advises using a sealed bag or case while crossing a temperature boundary and waiting before removing the equipment. If you see condensation, follow the equipment manual and allow moisture to evaporate before using the camera again.
