Yes. An RTX 5090 can use the adapter supplied with the card and separate PCIe 8-pin PSU cables, or a compatible native 16-pin PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 600 W. The exact number of 8-pin leads depends on the card’s instructions: NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide calls for at least four independent cables, while NVIDIA’s product page also describes three- or four-input configurations.
Which RTX 5090 power connections are supported?
NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide, Rev. 2 specifies two connection paths:
- Use the RTX 5090 PCIe Gen 5 adapter and connect its PCIe 8-pin inputs as directed for your card.
- Use one compatible PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for 600 W or greater.
For a Founders Edition card, NVIDIA says to use only the adapter included with that GeForce RTX 50 Series Founders Edition card. Do not assume that an adapter or cable intended for another card is interchangeable.
How many separate 8-pin cables do you need?
Follow the installation instructions for your exact RTX 5090. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide says to connect at least four independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables from the PSU to the adapter. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page lists four 8-pin cables with the adapter, but also says in its installation section that the card supports three or four PCIe 8-pin cables. Those instructions do not establish one universal count for every RTX 5090 adapter configuration.

Check the manual packaged with your card and the PSU documentation before connecting it. If the card’s directions call for four inputs, provide four separate PSU PCIe cables; do not treat two plugs on one daisy-chain cable as two independent cables.
Can you use the 12V-2×6 cable that came with your PSU?
Yes, if it is a PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W and approved for your exact PSU model. A connector that physically fits is not enough to establish compatibility. ASUS warns that modular PSU cables can have different pinouts between brands and models, and mixing cables can damage hardware. Check the PSU maker’s compatibility documentation or use the cable supplied with that PSU.

Adapter versus native cable
| Connection | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Card-supplied adapter | Use the adapter intended for the exact card. Connect the number of separate PCIe 8-pin PSU cables specified in that card’s instructions; NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide says at least four. |
| Native 16-pin cable | Use a PCIe Gen 5 cable rated at least 600 W and confirmed compatible with the exact PSU model. |
Either route still depends on the card and PSU instructions. ASUS’s graphics-card installation guidance recommends a separate PSU PCIe cable for each graphics-card or adapter power connector. It warns against connecting both ends of a PCIe splitter simultaneously because that may cause damage.

Connect and route the cable carefully
- Identify the exact RTX 5090 model and read its included installation instructions to determine whether it requires the supplied adapter and how many 8-pin inputs to populate.
- Check the PSU manual to confirm which PCIe cables are approved for that PSU. For modular units, never substitute a cable from another model or brand unless the PSU maker explicitly confirms compatibility.
- Run independent PSU PCIe cables to the adapter inputs when using the adapter, following the card maker’s stated count. Avoid relying on a splitter or daisy-chain where separate cables are required.
- If using a native 16-pin cable, verify both its at-least-600 W rating and compatibility with the exact PSU model.
- Seat the connector fully and route the cable without forcing it against the case or obstructing the connection. The cited manufacturer instructions do not specify a universal case-clearance measurement, so check your card, cable, and case fit rather than relying on a single generic dimension.
