Yes. The SSD in the 2024 Mac mini with M4 or M4 Pro can be removed and replaced, but it uses a proprietary, model-specific module and the job involves disassembly and software calibration. It is not a standard M.2 upgrade. If you mainly need more room for projects, media, or backups, an external NVMe SSD in a USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosure is usually the simpler choice.
What “upgradeable” means on the 2024 Mac mini
Apple does not offer a user-facing internal SSD upgrade path after purchase, but the storage module is physically removable. In a November 12, 2024 teardown, iFixit removed the SSD and used Apple Configurator to calibrate a 512GB replacement in place of a 256GB drive. That demonstrates that replacement is possible; it does not make the procedure a routine consumer upgrade. iFixit’s teardown describes removing the module after taking out a screw.
The internal drive is proprietary, not a conventional M.2 SSD you can buy and slot in. M4 and M4 Pro use different NAND modules, so a replacement has to match the exact model. The cited teardown coverage does not establish a dependable current retail supply of compatible modules.
RAM is different
Memory is integrated into the M4 chip and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Choose the memory configuration you need when buying the Mac mini; changing the SSD does not change that limitation. MacRumors’ teardown report notes both the model-specific storage modules and integrated memory.

Apple’s internal storage options
Apple’s 2024 specifications list the following SSD capacities for the M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini. These are configuration choices at purchase, not a promise that Apple will upgrade the machine later. Apple’s Mac mini specifications also list three Thunderbolt ports on each model: Thunderbolt 4 on M4, rated up to 40Gb/s, and Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro, rated up to 120Gb/s.

Why replacing the internal SSD is difficult
- It requires opening the computer. The module is inside the chassis, behind parts that must be removed carefully; small connectors and fasteners can be damaged.
- The replacement must be compatible. M4 and M4 Pro modules differ and are not physically interchangeable, according to the teardown coverage.
- Installation is not the whole job. iFixit’s successful capacity change involved calibration with Apple Configurator. A replacement may also require restore or setup steps.
- Parts availability is uncertain. The cited sources do not establish a reliable current supply or current pricing for aftermarket internal modules.
- Service becomes less straightforward. Opening the Mac can complicate service. Apple-configured storage avoids that exposure, while an external drive leaves the computer sealed.
This is best understood as a specialist repair, not a convenient way to save money at checkout. The available evidence does not establish that a standard off-the-shelf M.2 drive can replace the internal module.

When external storage is the better upgrade
For added workspace, media libraries, backups, and project files, an external NVMe SSD in a USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosure avoids opening the Mac. TechRadar’s April 13, 2025 comparison used an OWC Express 1M2 enclosure with a Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD and described the setup as easy to install and substantially cheaper per gigabyte than Apple’s configured storage. - Choose external NVMe if you want more capacity for files, media, backups, or working projects without opening the Mac.
- Choose Apple’s internal configuration if you need a single integrated internal volume, want the least compatibility risk, or do not want to manage a drive and cable.
- Consider internal replacement only if you are comfortable with advanced hardware work, can source the correct model-specific module, and can handle calibration and service trade-offs.
Check that the enclosure supports the interface you intend to use. M4 Mac mini has Thunderbolt 4 ports; M4 Pro has Thunderbolt 5 ports. An external drive is removable and may require workflow changes if you want applications or a boot volume to live on it, rather than just data.

Is the 512GB Mac mini worth buying instead?
That depends on how much data must live internally and how much you value convenience. TechRadar listed these US configurations and prices on April 13, 2025; they are dated figures, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability. TechRadar’s price comparison reported:

For the M4, TechRadar calculated that moving from 256GB to 512GB added 256GB for $200, or about $0.78 per added GB. Its calculations put the 1TB and 2TB upgrades at about $0.41 and $0.40 per added GB, respectively. Those are comparisons of Apple configuration prices reported in that 2025 analysis, not prices for an aftermarket internal module.

If you want everything internal, buy the capacity you expect to need at purchase. If your extra storage is mostly files and working space, keeping the base or smaller internal configuration and adding external NVMe is easier to reverse, replace, or carry to another computer.
