No—Apple’s documented iPhone unlocking methods are Face ID, Touch ID, and a passcode, not Siri. Siri may still respond to allowed requests while the iPhone is locked if Lock Screen access is enabled. That setting permits Siri access; it does not authenticate or unlock the device.
Can Siri unlock an iPhone?
Apple’s unlock instructions describe Face ID, Touch ID, and passcode entry. Its separate Siri activation guide explains how to make requests but does not list Siri as an unlocking method. Taken together, Apple’s published guidance does not support unlocking an iPhone simply by asking Siri.
If Siri answers while the phone is locked, that means the feature is available from the Lock Screen—not that Siri has verified your identity. Use the iPhone’s configured authentication method to unlock it.

How to unlock your iPhone
The steps depend on whether your iPhone uses Face ID or has a Home button with Touch ID. A passcode is another documented way to unlock the phone.

These steps follow Apple’s wake, unlock, and lock instructions; exact behavior can vary by model and configuration.
When the passcode is required
Biometrics do not replace the passcode in every situation. Apple says the passcode is required in circumstances including after turning on or restarting the iPhone, after a software update, after erasing the device, when viewing or changing passcode settings, and when installing a configuration profile. Why Siri may work while the iPhone is locked
In Settings, Allow Access When Locked controls whether selected features—including Siri—can be used from the locked device. It governs permitted Lock Screen access, not authentication. Apple’s passcode guidance lists other features that can also be available while locked, so Siri responding is not evidence that the iPhone has been unlocked.
To review the setting, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode on a Face ID model, or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode on a model with Touch ID. Enter the passcode if asked, then check the options under Allow Access When Locked. Menu names and layout can differ by iOS version.

How to activate Siri
Apple lists voice activation and the iPhone’s physical button as ways to start Siri. The available voice phrase and settings can depend on the model, language, region, and software version. Siri also requires an internet connection.
- By voice: Say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” where supported and configured. Apple notes that the “Siri” wake phrase is available only on supported models in some languages and regions.
- With a button: Press and hold the side button on iPhone models with Face ID, or press and hold the Home button on models that have one.
Depending on the interface, Siri settings may appear under Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple’s Siri activation instructions cover supported activation options.

Face ID’s attention setting
Face ID is designed to be attention-aware: when the attention feature is active, iPhone unlocks only when your eyes are open and looking at the screen. Apple directs users to Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention to adjust attention-related options. Turning on Require Attention for Face ID adds the look-at-screen requirement.
Apple notes that Require Attention for Face ID is off by default if VoiceOver is turned on during initial setup. For details and version-specific behavior, see Apple’s Face ID attention settings guidance.
