Yes. An old Windows PC can serve media folders to Plex and Jellyfin over your home network using SMB file sharing. The practical job is to confirm the machine and its Windows version are compatible, share only the folders you intend to expose, and make sure each media-server process can reach those folders with the right permissions. Calling it a “dumb NAS” is shorthand for using the PC as network storage; it is not a Windows product category.
What this setup does—and what it does not assume
The Windows machine stores the media and shares its folders over the local network. SMB is the file-sharing protocol applications use to access files on another computer; Microsoft describes it as “a network file sharing protocol.” See Microsoft’s SMB overview.
Plex Media Server or Jellyfin can run on that same PC or on another compatible computer. If the media server runs elsewhere, it needs a stable route to the Windows shares. Plex’s requirements page describes supported server platforms, but the right machine still depends on the software version and intended use. Nothing about the phrase “Windows Home Server” identifies the PC’s exact Windows release, hardware, storage health, or ability to handle transcoding.
Check the old server before building around it
- Identify the operating system. “Windows Home Server” can refer to an older product, not necessarily Windows 10 or 11. Do not assume a current Plex or Jellyfin release supports the installed OS; check the current application requirements for that specific release.
- Check the processor against Jellyfin’s requirements. The Jellyfin hardware guide says x86 CPUs need SSE4.1 starting with Jellyfin 10.11. Confirm the actual processor supports it before choosing that version.
- Assess the disks and expected workload. An old PC’s drive condition, CPU performance, noise, and power use cannot be inferred from its age or role. If you plan to run Plex or Jellyfin on the storage PC, verify that it can handle the playback and transcoding you expect rather than assuming it will.
- Check Windows support status. Microsoft says Windows 10 stopped receiving free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025. That date applies to Windows 10, not to every product called Windows Home Server; identify the installed edition and check its own lifecycle.
Choose where Plex or Jellyfin will run
Running storage and the media server on one PC keeps the basic design to one machine. Running the media server on a separate computer can also work, but adds a network connection and a mounted-share dependency. The useful decision points are:

- Processing: If the server must transcode, check whether the old CPU and any supported hardware acceleration meet your actual requirements.
- Startup reliability: If applications run on another machine, confirm the share mounts and authenticates after reboot, before Plex or Jellyfin starts scanning or serving media.
- Compatibility: Check both the installed Windows version and the current release requirements for your chosen media server.
- Access and upkeep: Decide which account can access the media and who will maintain the Windows host, shares, and application settings.
- Measured operating costs: Compare power use, noise, and drive condition on the actual machines; the available documentation does not establish those values for your hardware.
Share media folders over the trusted home network
- Connect the server to your router. A wired connection is a sensible option for a stationary file server; Microsoft’s small-network guidance recommends connecting devices to a router or hub with Ethernet. Use the network equipment and cabling appropriate to your home setup.
- Share only the folders you need. In Windows, use the current folder-sharing controls to share the media directories with specific people or accounts. Microsoft’s instructions cover sharing folders with specific people. Avoid opening up unrelated folders or relying on an old HomeGroup walkthrough: HomeGroup was removed in Windows 10.
- Use explicit permissions. Give the account used by the media server the access it needs to read the media. Keep the share available on the LAN whenever the server needs it, and avoid making a share broader than your household requires.
See Microsoft’s Windows folder-sharing guidance and its small-network setup guide for the relevant Windows steps.
Point Plex at the Windows share
On Windows, Plex can access a network share through a mapped drive or a UNC path. Use a path that stays available whenever Plex Media Server is running, and confirm it is visible to the Plex process itself—not merely to the desktop user who configured it. A drive letter mapped in an interactive sign-in may not be available to a service running under another identity.

- Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
Plex’s server requirements and platform guidance describe mapped drives and UNC paths. If media resides on a network-mounted location, filesystem change notifications may not work reliably for automatic library updates. If additions or changes do not appear, use a manual scan or configure periodic scans in Plex.

Make Jellyfin’s media path available to its process
Jellyfin’s storage guidance says Samba or NFS network storage must be mounted directly into the host operating system. Keep Jellyfin’s database on local storage: the project says, “The Jellyfin database should also be stored locally and not on a network storage device.” The Jellyfin storage documentation also warns that if a network share is unavailable during maintenance, scheduled tasks can affect library content. Make sure the mount is available before startup tasks and scheduled jobs run.

On Windows, Jellyfin’s service guide recommends using the Network Service account and granting it read and execute access to the media folder. If the media is on a remote SMB share, separately verify that the configured service identity can authenticate to and read that share; the local-folder ACL instructions alone are not a complete recipe for remote-share credentials. See the Jellyfin Windows service guide.

Keep the setup dependable
- Test access as the application’s identity. Confirm that Plex or Jellyfin can list and read the intended media path after a restart, not just while you are signed in as an administrator.
- Make the share and mount persistent. A media-server path that disappears at boot or after a network interruption can break scans or playback. For a separate media-server machine, check startup ordering and authentication.
- Handle library updates deliberately. Plex may need manual or periodic scans for network-mounted content when filesystem notifications are unavailable.
- Keep a separate backup plan. A shared folder makes files reachable over the network; it does not by itself provide a backup or establish that the old disks are healthy.
