You may be able to reuse an old Samsung Galaxy as a small, local Jellyfin server, but it is an experimental project—not a standard, officially documented Android installation. Jellyfin’s Android app is a client for watching from an existing server, not the server itself. The official materials reviewed do not provide a supported phone-server recipe, so the exact Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, server environment, storage access, and ability to keep the process running all matter.
If you want a dependable, unattended server, a supported computer or dedicated server is the safer choice. If you are comfortable troubleshooting an unofficial setup, first check whether your phone and media suit a direct-play workload, then prove the server works on your home network before considering remote access.
What you need to know before starting
Jellyfin separates the server from its client apps. The server scans and serves your media; the Android app connects to a server so you can browse and play it. Jellyfin’s Android client repository and client download page describe the app as a client. The official installation documentation and community-maintained packages list do not establish a standard Android-phone server installation procedure.

- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Phone and software: Record the exact Galaxy model, Android version, and One UI version. Compatibility with the chosen environment and ARM support must be established for that combination.
- Background operation: Confirm that the server process stays alive when the screen is off and that it can start again after a reboot. The Android-specific service setup and Samsung battery-management steps are not established by Jellyfin’s official installation instructions.
- Media access: Find out whether the server environment can read the intended media directories or mounted storage. Android permissions and storage access vary by setup.
- Network: The phone must remain powered and connected to your home network. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance recommends Ethernet for servers and does not recommend Wi-Fi for server hardware; a phone on Wi-Fi is therefore a compromise to test for stability.
- Playback workload: List the file types, codecs, and resolutions you plan to watch, and check whether your playback devices can handle them directly. This is more important than guessing how many streams an old phone can serve.
How to decide whether your Galaxy is a reasonable fit
Prefer direct play over transcoding
Jellyfin clients report what they can play, including supported codecs, resolutions, and bitrate limits. The server selects an output based on those capabilities. If a client cannot handle a file as stored, Jellyfin may need to transcode it—convert it while serving playback. Jellyfin’s codec support documentation and transcoding guide explain this relationship.
Transcoding is resource-intensive. An older phone may have video-decoding hardware, but that does not establish that a particular Android server environment can make Jellyfin’s FFmpeg integration use it. Do not assume hardware acceleration will work, or that a Galaxy can handle a particular number of simultaneous streams, without testing the exact phone, software route, and files. A small library played locally by clients that can direct-play its files is the more realistic use case.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Check the storage path, not just capacity
Jellyfin reads media from the filesystem available to the server. Its storage guidance says a network SMB or NFS share must be mounted by the host operating system; it also says, “The Jellyfin database should also be stored locally and not on a network storage device.” An Android server environment may not see a USB drive, network share, or ordinary phone folder automatically, so verify access in the environment you choose rather than assuming a drive will appear.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

What setup involves once a server is running
Jellyfin’s Setup Wizard Walkthrough describes the configuration you would encounter in a supported server environment: create libraries, choose metadata language and region, and configure networking. These steps explain what a running server needs; they do not demonstrate that the server can be installed or maintained on Android.
For a Galaxy installation, you would first need a credible community server route compatible with your device, then verify its media permissions, background behavior, and recovery after restart. Because a reliable procedure across Galaxy models and Android/One UI versions has not been established, do not treat desktop Linux instructions as copy-and-paste Android instructions.

Keep the first test on your home network
Start by confirming that the phone can stay awake as a server, scan a small library, and play a file from another device on your local network. Jellyfin’s hardware guide states: “Jellyfin Server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet.” The networking documentation and setup wizard guide cover network configuration; the wizard recommends disabling automatic port mapping unless specifically required because it relies on UPnP.

Do not enable remote access as a shortcut to testing. First establish that local playback and the phone’s uptime are reliable. If you later need access away from home, consult Jellyfin’s current networking guidance and account for the security implications rather than exposing the server directly.

When to choose another device
A Galaxy is most defensible as a low-cost local experiment, not as a set-and-forget replacement for a supported server. A small dedicated computer or other supported host is generally easier to maintain because Jellyfin documents installation paths for supported environments; an Android-phone route remains unverified in the official material cited here. Choose another device if you need unattended operation, dependable storage and network access, or regular transcoding. No price, power-use, or phone performance comparison is established here, so compare those factors for the specific devices available to you.
