Sometimes, but not reliably from appearance alone. Visual oddities can raise questions, yet no dependable visual test proves that an entire movie was made with AI. A filmmaker’s disclosure or a verifiable provenance record can offer stronger evidence; a missing record or a detector’s negative result cannot rule AI use out.

What signs might suggest AI-generated video?

Look for details that seem inconsistent within a shot, such as unusually smooth surfaces, lighting or shadows that do not agree, a convincing subject against an incoherent background, mismatched face edges or skin tone, or mouth movements that do not fit the speech. These are prompts to investigate—not proof. Generative techniques change quickly, and skilled prompting or editing can remove visible artifacts.

As generative-AI expert Henry Ajder told the Associated Press in its May 7, 2024, guide to spotting synthetic images, “Some widely shared advice — such as looking for unnatural blinking patterns among people in deepfake videos — no longer holds.” Treat any single visual rule with caution.

Check context as well as pixels

Ask whether the scene’s location and timing make sense, whether reputable independent outlets show the same footage, and whether the filmmaker, studio, or distributor has described how the movie was made. The Associated Press guide recommends plausibility and corroboration when examining viral synthetic media. That approach is useful for a suspicious clip, but corroborating footage alone does not establish how every part of a production was created.

Which evidence is most useful?

Evidence has different reach: a visual clue may concern one frame, a credential may describe the history of a particular file, and a creator disclosure may address a production more broadly. Consider what each source actually covers before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Look for a production disclosure. Check statements from the filmmaker, studio, or distributor for whether AI was used and, if so, in which parts of production. Treat a disclosure as a source claim to assess, rather than as something you can infer from the image alone.
  2. Inspect provenance on the best available original file. C2PA Content Credentials can include signed assertions about an asset’s origin, edits, and actions involving AI or machine learning. Verification can establish whether a signed record is valid and associated with the file, subject to whether you trust its signer. It does not certify that the movie is truthful or artistically authentic. The C2PA specification 2.2 explainer puts the limit plainly: “Provenance information can help establish the truth about the origin, history and authenticity of digital content, by providing evidence for its creation, discovery, ownership and movement over time; but provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.”
  3. Find out what a detector supports. A result applies only to the signals, media types, and formats the tool checks. OpenAI’s provenance documentation says its check looks for supported OpenAI signals in images and audio; it is not a general-purpose AI detector and does not detect all other companies’ generated content.
  4. Use visual analysis to guide corroboration. Compare lighting, background consistency, face boundaries, and audio synchronization, then seek reliable reporting or an original production source. Do not turn an artifact into a categorical claim.

Why missing credentials do not settle the question

Content Credentials are opt-in, and a provenance chain may be incomplete. Metadata can be removed, and software that edits an asset may not update its credentials. A credential attached to a file may also fail to survive reproduction of that file into another image. C2PA advises against distrusting media solely because credentials are absent; the U.S. Office of Research Integrity also describes metadata stripping and incomplete adoption. So, no credential means only that you do not have that record—not that AI was or was not used.

Why a detector cannot give a universal verdict

Detectors look for signals they are designed to recognize; support for one system or format does not imply coverage of all generators or all kinds of media. OpenAI’s documented provenance API checks C2PA credentials for images and SynthID for supported images and audio, but its documentation does not claim to detect every AI system or content type. A “not detected” result means only that the checked signals were not found. It cannot rule out content from another system, content made before a relevant signal was available, or a signal lost or degraded through later processing.

The available sources do not establish a named accuracy rate for viewers identifying AI-made feature films or for detectors covering feature films as a whole. There is no basis here for turning a tool result or a visual guess into a percentage or a definitive movie-wide verdict.

How to state a conclusion responsibly

  • If the original creator or distributor makes a clear disclosure, describe it as that source’s account and specify which part of production it covers.
  • If a credential is valid, describe what its signed record says about that asset and its recorded history; do not treat it as a truth certificate.
  • If you notice suspicious visual details, identify them as clues and seek independent context or corroboration.
  • If a tool finds no supported signal or no credential is present, report that limited result—not that the movie was made without AI.
  • If the available evidence does not establish how the production was made, say that the evidence is insufficient.
