Yes—but pack a power bank in your carry-on, never in checked baggage. Under the FAA’s U.S. passenger guidance, banks up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) are allowed; 101–160 Wh requires airline approval, and anything over 160 Wh is prohibited on passenger aircraft. IATA’s 2026 passenger guidance further limits travelers to two lithium-ion power banks, each no more than 100 Wh. Airlines can set stricter rules, so check the carrier operating each flight.
Power bank rules by capacity
A power bank is treated as a spare lithium-ion battery. The FAA’s thresholds below are U.S. passenger guidance; they are not a guarantee that every airline will accept a bank under the same conditions.
| Battery capacity | FAA passenger guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Up to and including 100 Wh | Allowed on passenger aircraft as a spare battery in carry-on baggage. | Pack it in the cabin and check your operating airline’s quantity limits. |
| 101–160 Wh | Requires air-carrier approval; no more than two qualifying spare batteries per person. | Get approval from the airline before traveling. Do not assume the bank will be accepted. |
| Over 160 Wh | Not allowed on passenger aircraft under FAA guidance. | Do not bring it on a passenger flight. |
The FAA says airlines may impose stricter limits. IATA’s 2026 passenger guidance states a maximum of two lithium-ion power banks, each no more than 100 Wh. For your itinerary, verify the current policy with the airline operating each flight, especially when you have international or connecting segments. The sources cited here do not establish a country-by-country comparison of rules.
Where to pack a power bank
Keep spare power banks in the cabin, not in checked baggage. TSA screening guidance also directs travelers to carry spare power banks in carry-on baggage and refers to FAA limits: TSA: What Can I Bring?

If an airline takes your carry-on at the gate to place it in the hold, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin. Protect its terminals from contact with metal or other battery terminals: IATA lists the original packaging, insulating exposed terminals, or placing the battery in an individual plastic bag or protective pouch as possible methods. A dedicated pouch is one option, not a requirement.
How to check a power bank’s watt-hours
Look for a Wh rating on the bank or its manufacturer label. If the label gives only milliamp-hours (mAh) and the battery’s nominal voltage, calculate:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × volts
For example, a 10,000 mAh bank with a nominal voltage of 3.7 V is 37 Wh: 10,000 ÷ 1,000 × 3.7 = 37. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about a particular product. Do not mistake watts (output power) for watt-hours (stored energy), or use a USB charging-output voltage in place of the battery’s nominal voltage.
The FAA explains how to calculate Wh when it is not marked: FAA: Airline Passengers and Batteries. If the rating is missing, unreadable, or undocumented, a calculation may help establish capacity, but acceptance can depend on the airline’s checks; do not assume the bank will be allowed.

Check for damage and airline-specific limits
- Check the current battery policy of the operating airline for every flight on your itinerary. Carrier rules may be stricter than the FAA baseline.
- Keep exposed terminals insulated or the bank individually protected to reduce short-circuit risk.
- Do not take a battery likely to spark or generate dangerous heat aboard unless it has been removed or made safe, as the FAA advises.
FAA passenger rules and IATA guidance are available at FAA: Airline Passengers and Batteries and IATA: Passengers travelling with lithium batteries. These sources cover the U.S. guidance and IATA’s 2026 passenger recommendations; check the relevant airline and local authority for other jurisdictions or rules that may have changed.
