Not reliably. You can reduce the ways a public photo leads back to you, but no single step can guarantee anonymity once the image is online. A face may be matched against other images, while captions, tags, recognizable surroundings, profile links, and file metadata can reveal identity in different ways.
How can a public photo identify you?
Identification does not depend on facial recognition alone. A person may connect an image to you through information in or around the post, or in the photo file itself. These routes are distinct, so addressing one does not necessarily address the others.

Does a photo of your face count as biometric data?
Not automatically in every legal context. The UK ICO distinguishes an ordinary photograph from biometric data created when specific technical processing enables a person to be uniquely identified. A visible face can be used as input to biometric recognition, but that does not mean every ordinary photo is automatically biometric data under every law. Is removing location data enough?
No. Removing EXIF or location information can reduce what a photo file reveals when you upload a future image, but it does not alter the face or contextual details visible in the picture. Nor can it recall copies already posted. Metadata removal addresses only the file-information route; it is not a general anonymity measure.

What should you do if the photo is already online?
- Contact the person or organization that posted it. Ask them to remove the photo or video, or to blur you and repost it. The Dutch Data Protection Authority says contacting the poster is often the quickest route: Personal data on the Internet.
- Ask for associated identifying details to be removed. Where relevant, request changes to your name, tags, caption, or links to a public profile. This reduces some contextual clues but does not prevent face matching or guarantee that the image is no longer accessible elsewhere.
- Use the platform’s reporting process if the poster does not help. Report the image under the platform’s applicable rules. A report does not guarantee removal, and copies may remain outside that service.
- Check the rules where you live before escalating legally. Contact the relevant local privacy regulator or seek local legal guidance. The Dutch authority describes possible escalation to its regulator or preliminary relief proceedings in the Netherlands; those routes should not be treated as universal remedies.
Local law matters. The FTC’s Facing Facts is a U.S. policy report from 2012, while the Dutch authority describes options in the Netherlands. The Philippines National Privacy Commission’s January 11, 2024 notice warns of risks such as identity theft, fraud, harassment, and stalking when photos or videos containing personal data are shared publicly, in the context of the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012: Philippine National Privacy Commission notice. None of these sources establishes a global rule that posting someone else’s image is always illegal or that the person pictured always has a right to have it removed. The outcome depends on the jurisdiction, circumstances, poster, and platform.

- Where practical, avoid publishing an identifiable image or ask the poster not to include you.
- Review the caption, tags, visible surroundings, and any links that could connect the photo to your public profiles.
- Remove EXIF and location data from the file before uploading if you do not want that information attached.
- Use available platform privacy controls, while recognizing that settings on one account do not control copies or contextual information elsewhere.
These are ways to reduce particular exposure routes, not tested guarantees. The consulted sources do not establish a current general statistic for how often people are identified from public photos or how accurately identification works in this specific setting, so an accuracy percentage would not be a sound prediction for your own image.
