Sometimes—but there is no single answer for every ZTE phone. Whether yours works in the United States depends on its exact model and regional variant, unlock status, carrier acceptance of its IMEI, supported frequency bands, local coverage, and carrier-provisioned VoLTE for calls. Check the phone with the carrier you plan to use before switching service or relying on it.
What can work—and what may not
A ZTE phone can power on, connect to Wi-Fi, and run apps without having usable cellular service. Cellular functions must be considered separately: a phone might have data access but fail to place ordinary calls, or work in one area while having weaker coverage or slower data elsewhere.
- Calls: The handset must support VoLTE, the local network must support it, and the carrier must enable it for the SIM and device. ZTE says VoLTE service must be enabled for the SIM; some operators allow online use, while others require the SIM to be used at a physical office. See ZTE Support.
- Mobile data and coverage: The phone needs compatible radio bands and usable coverage where you use it. T-Mobile warns that outside devices may have only partial compatibility, reduced coverage, or slower data speeds (T-Mobile BYOD guidance).
- Activation: The intended carrier must accept the exact phone’s IMEI and hardware/software configuration. An IMEI match is an eligibility signal, not a guarantee of identical service everywhere.
- Other features: Do not infer that SMS, roaming, emergency-call behavior, or every carrier feature will work just because a signal icon appears. Confirm the functions you need with the carrier and, after activation, test them where possible.
How to check whether your ZTE phone will work
- Find the full model number and variant. Check Settings > About phone, the box, or the device label. “ZTE phone” is not specific enough: regional variants of a model can support different bands or carrier configurations.
- Run the intended carrier’s current BYOD check using the IMEI. T-Mobile directs customers to check device compatibility and its support for the carrier’s frequencies, VoLTE, and Extended Range LTE (T-Mobile BYOD guidance). Verizon also requires BYOD devices to be unlocked and compatible with its hardware and software requirements, and provides a device compatibility check (Verizon BYOD guidance).
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked. T-Mobile and Verizon both make unlocking a condition of BYOD eligibility. Unlocking removes a carrier restriction; it does not add missing bands, enable VoLTE, or compel a carrier to accept the device.
- Verify VoLTE—not just LTE data. Ask the carrier whether it supports and provisions VoLTE for this exact model and SIM. A VoLTE option in the phone’s settings does not prove that the carrier will provision it.
- Check the actual model’s bands and local coverage. ZTE advises customers to compare the device’s supported bands with carrier frequencies (ZTE connectivity guidance). Use specifications for your exact variant rather than a generic list of ZTE bands.
- Test the service you depend on. If the carrier accepts the phone, check calls, texts, and data after activation. An acceptance result does not promise full performance in every location.
What carrier information says about specific ZTE models
| Carrier source | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon’s ZTE device page (Verizon ZTE support) | Verizon identifies the ZTE Blade Vantage as no longer supported. The page also says it continues to support other ZTE devices. | It is not a complete whitelist or proof that every other ZTE model can be activated or will receive full service. |
| AT&T’s ZTE help selector (AT&T device support selector) | The selector presents help entries for Maven 2 (Z831), Blade A3 Plus, Blade A7P, and Blade A3L. | Help content for a model name does not by itself confirm current activation eligibility for every variant. |
These pages are useful clues, not substitutes for entering the phone’s IMEI in the intended carrier’s current checker.
Why older ZTE phones can lose calling service
Older phones may have relied on 3G for voice calls. The FCC records AT&T’s 3G retirement in February 2022 and Verizon’s final 3G shutdown as January 3, 2023 (FCC 24-45; FCC order concerning Verizon’s 3G transition). A handset that lacks carrier-supported VoLTE may therefore be unable to make ordinary cellular calls on a network that has retired 3G.

The shutdown dates do not mean every old ZTE phone stopped working on the same day, nor that every newer ZTE phone works. Generic “4G” or “LTE” labeling is not proof of current voice compatibility; check the exact model’s VoLTE support and carrier eligibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to keep it, switch, or replace it
- Keep using it if the carrier accepts its IMEI and the phone supports the bands, VoLTE, and services you need where you use it.
- Consider another carrier only after checking that carrier’s current compatibility tool. A phone accepted by one provider may not be accepted by another.
- Replace it if the intended carrier rejects it, VoLTE calling is unsupported or unprovisioned, or coverage and service are inadequate. Before buying, check the precise replacement model and IMEI with your carrier; “unlocked” alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
Carrier eligibility tools and policies can change. The phone model, variant, carrier, location, and needed features determine the answer; a brand-wide count or percentage of ZTE phones that work is not established by the carrier information cited here.
