Yes. Android still allows apps to be installed from outside Google Play, but the setup depends on your Android version and, in a limited rollout, where you are and which app store you use. Sideloading also means taking extra care to verify an app’s source, permissions and update path: an install warning or successful scan is not a guarantee that an app is safe.

What sideloading means on Android

Sideloading is installing an Android app from a source other than Google Play, commonly using an APK file. It can be useful when an app is unavailable in your region or is distributed directly by its developer. The trade-off is that you must judge the file’s provenance and trustworthiness rather than relying on the usual Play Store install route.

How Android controls installs from outside Google Play

Android has not removed the ability to install apps from other sources. Instead, it requires users to opt in to installs from a source. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, this permission is granted to a particular source, such as the browser or file manager used to open an APK. Android 7.1.1 (API 25) and earlier use a broader “Unknown sources” setting. Device makers can change menu names and layouts, so there is no single settings path that applies to every phone. Google’s Android developer documentation explains the install-source model.

Where the September 2026 developer-verification rules apply

As of October 4, 2026, Google says its new developer-verification protections began on September 30 for apps from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, on certified devices running Android 7 or later. Google’s developer-verification page says broader global expansion is planned for 2027.

The initial enforcement is not a global block on APKs. Google says direct sideloads and apps distributed through stores outside the initial participating-store list are not covered by the September 2026 enforcement yet. In cases where an unregistered app is blocked, Google identifies ADB or an advanced flow as available paths. These details describe the rollout as of October 4, 2026; scope may change as it expands. See Google’s developer-verification FAQ for current details.

What the advanced flow involves

Google describes the advanced flow as a one-time setup for power users who choose to install apps from unverified developers. In its March 2026 explanation, the process requires enabling developer mode, confirming that nobody is coercing you, restarting and reauthenticating, waiting one day, then confirming with device credentials. Afterward, the user can enable the flow for seven days or indefinitely, while still seeing an unverified-developer warning. The delay is designed to interrupt pressure tactics, not to certify the app as safe. Google’s explanation of the advanced flow describes the rationale.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What risks come with sideloading?

Malware and repackaged apps

Google said in a March 30, 2026 Android Developers Blog post that its recent analysis found over 90 times more malware from sideloaded sources than on Google Play. The cited passage does not give the methodology, denominator or a per-download probability, so the figure should not be read as the chance that any particular APK is malicious. It does support treating unfamiliar download sources with caution. Google’s post contains the comparison.

Permission abuse, fraud and coercion

An app can request access to personal data or capabilities that do not fit its purpose. A caller, text or online message that urges you to install an app, grant sensitive access or disable safeguards is a serious warning sign. Google says the advanced flow is intended in part to slow coercive attempts to get people to bypass protections. Its Play Protect help page explains how harmful apps may be handled.

Screen capture, overlays and device control

Google’s Play Integrity documentation identifies threats involving apps that capture the screen, draw overlays or control a device, including misuse of accessibility permissions. These are threat categories, not a claim that every sideloaded app behaves this way. Be especially cautious when an app asks for accessibility access or other powerful permissions without a clear reason. Google’s Play Integrity overview describes these risks.

App recognition and service compatibility

Some apps and services distinguish recognized binaries and installs from Google Play from other installs. An app might limit a feature or treat an outside-Play copy differently; this is a possible compatibility or access issue, not an inevitable result of sideloading. Google discusses install and app-integrity signals in its Play Integrity documentation.

How to reduce the risk before installing an APK

  1. Choose a trustworthy source. Prefer the developer’s official site or an established alternative store. Avoid search advertisements, unsolicited links and files sent with a demand to act quickly.
  2. Check who published it. Confirm the developer identity and app name, and review package or source details where available. Look for an explanation of how the app receives updates; a legitimate install also needs a trustworthy update route.
  3. Question permissions. Stop if the requested access does not make sense for the app’s purpose. Do not grant sensitive access simply because a caller or message tells you to.
  4. Keep protections current. Update Android and Google Play system components, and keep Play Protect enabled. Google says Play Protect checks apps during installation and periodically, and may warn about, disable or remove harmful apps. If asked to scan an unfamiliar app, understand that Google may receive app details for code-level evaluation. A scan is one safety signal, not a guarantee. Google Play Protect help describes these checks.
  5. Do not rush through a warning. If Android displays a developer-verification warning, pause and independently confirm why you need the app. Pressure to bypass safeguards is a reason to stop, not a reason to hurry.
  6. Remove suspicious apps. Uninstall an app and revoke its permissions if its behavior differs from the developer’s explanation or a security warning appears.

Is sideloading ever reasonable?

It can be a reasonable choice when you have a specific need and can verify both the developer and the distribution route—for example, downloading directly from a developer’s official site or using an established alternative store with a clear update mechanism. The decision is harder when the file comes from an unknown host, the publisher is unclear, permissions seem excessive, or someone is pressuring you to disable protections. Developer verification and Play Protect can add safeguards, but neither substitutes for checking the source and the app’s behavior.
