You can compare images for visual differences, but you cannot reliably prove from appearance alone that an arbitrary still image used DLSS 5. The images for this challenge were not included, so there is no sound basis to label any particular one. To make a dependable comparison, you need the images’ source and capture details, including the game, scene, settings, and whether DLSS Neural Rendering was enabled.

Why the images aren’t enough to identify DLSS 5

NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a real-time generative rendering stage that produces the final displayed appearance, rather than only reconstructing an image from a lower-resolution input. The model uses the current rendered frame, engine motion vectors, temporal state, and artistic-direction values, according to NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 research page.

NVIDIA says the system can create effects such as subsurface scattering in skin, light scattering through foliage, micro-reflections, and material interactions. Those descriptions explain what the technology is designed to do; they are not visual fingerprints that authenticate an image. A realistic face, softly lit leaves, or convincing reflections could appear in an image for other reasons. NVIDIA’s reviewed materials do not provide a general method for detecting DLSS 5 from a still.

What a fair comparison needs

Start with provenance rather than a visual guess. For each image, establish where it came from and whether it is a direct capture or has been edited, compressed, or otherwise processed. Then compare captures from the same game and scene, with matching settings, and confirm whether DLSS Neural Rendering was on or off. Without that information, a difference in lighting or detail cannot be attributed confidently to DLSS 5.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  • Useful evidence: verified source details and capture records showing the game, scene, settings, and rendering state.
  • Weak evidence on its own: apparent realism, skin shading, foliage, reflections, or other effects NVIDIA associates with DLSS 5.
  • Vendor demonstrations: NVIDIA’s own before-and-after images can illustrate its claims, but should be identified as company demonstrations, not independent authentication.

NVIDIA also says developers can control model selection, structure and tone intensity, and masking. That means the appearance may vary according to a developer’s direction; there is no single look a viewer can treat as a universal tell. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 announcement for its description of those controls.

What DLSS 5 is—and where NVIDIA says it is supported

NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a locally run stage in existing game pipelines, operating at up to 4K resolution. That figure is NVIDIA’s published specification, not an independently measured benchmark. Its September 3, 2026 FAQ says DLSS 5 is optional and lists GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, plus GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs, as supported. NVIDIA names the in-game setting “DLSS Neural Rendering.”

The same FAQ says DLSS 5 can be used alongside ray tracing, path tracing, Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. Support and game availability can change. NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 launch post said DLSS 5 was available in NBA 2K27 and advised installing the latest Game Ready driver; treat that as a dated launch statement, not a current compatibility list.

Verdict for this image challenge

There are no images here to assess, and even a supplied still would not establish DLSS 5 use by visual appearance alone. A defensible answer requires the image set plus reliable capture provenance; otherwise, the best conclusion is that the processing state is unknown.
