Yes—but YouTube does not automatically burn Super Chat messages into prerecorded footage. If you send the video as an active livestream, eligible viewers can use Super Chat in its Live Chat. To show messages over the video itself, add a chat overlay in a streaming encoder and send that composed output to YouTube. A Premiere is another option for real-time interaction, but its chat is not automatically placed on the video image.
What “on screen” means
There are two different ways viewers can see chat:
- Beside the video: YouTube Live Chat appears on the watch page during an eligible livestream. This is part of YouTube’s interface, not part of the video image.
- Over the video: A streaming encoder places a chat overlay on the program output before it reaches YouTube. The messages then appear within the video frame.
YouTube describes Super Chats as brightly colored, pinned messages that viewers can purchase during livestreams and Premieres. They are a Live Chat feature, and not every chat necessarily supports them. See YouTube’s overview of live streams.
How to put chat over a prerecorded livestream
Use this workflow when you want messages to appear over the footage rather than only beside the player. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers sending a produced stream; OBS and Streamlabs describe ways to add a chat widget to that output. The precise controls vary with the software and widget you choose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Prepare the prerecorded video as an encoder source. Open your streaming software and add the finished video file as a media or playback source. Check that it plays as intended and that its audio is included.
- Add a chat overlay. In OBS Studio, add the overlay as a Browser Source. OBS says it does not directly provide a facility to show stream chat in the stream; a third-party overlay can be embedded with a Browser Source. Streamlabs also documents a Chat Box widget for YouTube chat. See OBS’s chat overlay instructions and Streamlabs’ Chat Box setup guide.
- Position and size the overlay in the program frame. Keep it legible without covering important parts of the prerecorded video. Preview the composed scene, including the video and overlay, before starting the broadcast.
- Send the composed output to YouTube. Create or schedule a livestream in YouTube Studio, then use the stream key and connection details shown for that stream in your encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or expose it in a public scene.
- Verify what viewers will actually see. Test with a private or unlisted stream where appropriate. Confirm that the overlay appears in the video output and that the particular widget displays Super Chats—not just ordinary chat—in the way you expect.
Will every chat widget show Super Chats?
Do not assume so. A widget may display YouTube chat without reproducing every Super Chat’s paid highlighting, pinning, or other presentation. Streamlabs documents a YouTube-capable Chat Box, but its cited setup information does not establish that every Super Chat treatment is supported in every configuration. Check the current widget behavior before promising viewers that paid messages will appear in a particular style.

Alternative: use a Premiere
A Premiere lets viewers watch prerecorded video together and chat in real time. YouTube says viewers can chat during Premieres, and some Live Chats support Super Chats. The YouTube documentation does not say that a Premiere automatically overlays those messages on the video image. Use the Premiere’s watch-page chat if that is sufficient; use an encoder overlay when messages need to be part of the video frame.
Limits viewers may encounter
- Watch-page chat is not the same as an overlay. YouTube’s native Live Chat appears alongside the video on the watch page; it is not composited into the stream. YouTube says Live Chat is unavailable on embedded players. Some settings, including subscriber-only chat, can also restrict who participates. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream information.
- Chat replay is for the archive. YouTube says live chat replay is available on stream archives and reproduces chat alongside the stream as it appeared live. It is on by default for livestreams. Once the stream ends, live chat itself is no longer available, though viewers may be able to comment below the video. See YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.
- Check eligibility and settings. Super Chats require a supported Live Chat; their availability is not guaranteed for every stream or viewer. Review the current YouTube settings and eligibility details before relying on paid messages as part of the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not capture a live camera. StreamNeo streams your uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and there is a $9.99 per month option. StreamNeo’s cloud playback does not by itself add a Super Chat overlay; use an encoder/widget workflow if messages must appear on the video image. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
