Upwork explicitly treats automated scraping of its public or private data—including job watchers that scrape or run searches—as a form of bot use it does not allow. Public visibility is not permission. If you need job-posting data, ask Upwork whether it will approve API access for your exact application and whether an approved endpoint includes the posts and skill fields you need. An API key alone does not authorize scraping or guarantee access to those fields.
Can you scrape public Upwork job postings?
Upwork’s automation guidance expressly lists scraping public or private data and job-alert or watcher tools that scrape or run searches as examples of prohibited bot use. It says unauthorized automation may result in warnings, temporary restrictions, or permanent blocking. Upwork’s wording is explicit: “Even if the tool says it was created for Upwork, it doesn’t mean it’s allowed, approved, or endorsed by us.” Read Upwork’s guidance on bots and automation.
That applies to the collection method, not just whether a posting is visible without logging in. A script that fetches pages, a browser automation job that searches repeatedly, and a watcher that monitors postings can still be automated collection. Do not treat a public page, a logged-in session, or a working script as authorization.
Upwork’s policy position is not a legal opinion about every jurisdiction or every possible use of job data. Separate legal, privacy, and contractual obligations may apply to your project; Upwork’s own permission rules remain a distinct issue.

What “skills” means in an Upwork job post
Upwork’s client guidance says a client can choose suggested skills or type their own when creating a job. It allows up to ten skills and recommends aiming for three to five. The skills are job-post metadata intended to help narrow freelancers’ search results. Upwork’s job-posting guidance explains how clients add skills.
This describes how a job is created and how the fields are intended to help with search. It does not establish that each public job page exposes skills in a stable machine-readable format, that every posting has the same fields, or that Upwork makes those fields available through an approved API. If skill values are essential to your application, name them explicitly when you request API access and ask Upwork to confirm whether the authorized endpoint returns them.

The permitted route to investigate: request Upwork API access
For a legitimate integration, start with Upwork’s API access and authentication materials, rather than scraping website pages. Upwork describes application permissions at the endpoint level and content permissions at the user level, connected to a team or company context. Access is requested and reviewed; it is not an automatic entitlement. Upwork’s API access and authentication category is the starting point, and its API scopes and permissions guidance explains the permission model.

Prepare a specific application request
- Describe the use case. Explain what your application will do, who will use it, and whether it is internal or public. Upwork says applicants should explain the application’s purpose and why they need API access.
- Identify the exact data and actions. State that you need public job postings and, if required, their associated skill fields. Do not assume the scope exists: ask whether an approved endpoint currently returns those fields for your use case.
- Check account eligibility. Upwork says criteria include a valid profile and address, a verified payment method, identity verification, account standing, and stated activity thresholds. Review the current access requirements directly with Upwork because eligibility is reviewed.
- Request only relevant permissions. API access is scoped. Match the requested application permissions and user/content permissions to the actual functionality instead of assuming a key grants broad access.
- Wait for approval and follow the approved method. Use only approved API endpoints and the authorized authentication flow and scope. Approval for one purpose should not be taken to authorize a different purpose or collection method.
What the available guidance does not confirm
Upwork’s public guidance reviewed here does not establish that an approved endpoint currently returns public job postings and their skill fields for every applicant or use case. Treat the endpoint and data scope as an open question for Upwork’s API review. Do not build a scraper as a fallback if the requested endpoint or fields are not approved.

An API key does not make other access methods acceptable. Upwork says calls to website pages instead of approved API endpoints, scripts using session cookies or browser OAuth tokens, excessive polling, and out-of-scope use can trigger enforcement. Use the approved endpoints and authentication guidance; do not automate the website with a logged-in browser or reuse session credentials in a script.
Internal, public, and commercial applications are not the same
Clarify the audience and business model in the request. Upwork says commercial API use is available only to selected commercial partners with prior written permission. A standard API key or ordinary API access approval should not be assumed to cover a commercial service. Upwork also says it does not allow jobs that ask people to scrape data they have no right to collect, including data from Upwork, or that violate its site terms. That is Upwork’s stated platform position, not a determination of the law in every location. Its prohibited-jobs guidance and Trust and Safety page provide the platform context.

Upwork identifies automated scraping and tools that search or watch for jobs as disallowed bot behavior, and says unauthorized automation may bring warnings, temporary restrictions, or permanent blocking. Its 2025 Marketplace Transparency Report says Upwork introduced automated detections for unauthorized bot usage in 2025 and reports a year-over-year reduction of more than 31% in exposure to scam job posts. That is a company-reported safety outcome; it is not a scraping-prevalence figure, a scraper success rate, or a measure of an individual account’s likelihood of enforcement. - If you only need to find jobs as a freelancer, use Upwork’s normal search and notification features rather than a scraper.
- If you are building an integration, identify the exact use, audience, fields, and actions before applying for API access.
- If required fields include skills, ask explicitly whether the approved endpoint returns them for the relevant posts.
- If your application is commercial, obtain Upwork’s prior written permission as a selected commercial partner before relying on API use.
- If Upwork does not approve the needed endpoint or data scope, do not substitute browser scraping, page requests, session-cookie scripts, or automated job searches.
- Consider any separate privacy and legal obligations for your jurisdiction and intended use; platform permission alone does not answer every legal question.
