No—if an ATM looks altered or its card reader or keypad seems unusual, don’t use it. Choose another machine or another way to get cash, and report the concern to the bank or ATM operator using contact details you obtain independently. If you already used it, contact your card issuer promptly and check your account for unauthorized activity.

What can make an ATM look tampered with?

Skimming devices can be installed on or inside ATMs and other payment terminals to capture card data. A false reader may be fitted over the real slot; a hidden camera can record a PIN; or a false keypad can capture keystrokes. Some devices are difficult to spot, so a visual inspection cannot certify that an ATM is safe. The FBI describes these methods in its ATM skimming guidance and current skimming guidance.

  • Look for a loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched component.
  • Watch for tape or adhesive residue around the reader or keypad.
  • Notice whether the reader or keypad appears inconsistent with the rest of the machine, or moves or feels unusual.

A scratch by itself does not establish that an ATM has been compromised. But if something looks damaged or out of place, use another machine rather than trying to determine whether the mark is harmless. No visual checklist can prove that the machine is clean.

What should you do if an ATM looks suspicious?

  1. Stop before inserting your card or entering your PIN. Do not tug aggressively at the reader, dismantle the machine, or confront anyone.
  2. Choose another way to get cash. When practical, use an indoor, well-lit ATM. Location is a precaution, not a guarantee that a machine is safe.
  3. Report the concern to the bank or operator. Use contact details from the bank’s official app or website, or another known channel. Do not rely on a phone number newly attached to the machine.

How can you reduce risk at an ATM?

Use a machine that appears intact, and cover the keypad while entering your PIN. Shielding your PIN can make it harder for a camera to record it, but it does not stop a compromised reader from capturing card data. If any part of the ATM looks altered, leave it unused even if you can cover the keypad.

The FBI recommends well-lit indoor locations where possible, but no location makes an ATM risk-free. A 2017 FBI story quoted a supervisory special agent saying that a machine in a main area is less likely to have been tampered with; that is a relative observation, not a safety guarantee. The FBI’s 2017 account provides that context.

What if you already used the ATM?

Contact the financial institution that issued your card promptly. Explain that you may have used a suspicious or compromised ATM, then follow the issuer’s instructions about protecting or replacing the card and changing your PIN. Check recent account activity and keep monitoring it. If your institution offers transaction alerts or card controls, check whether they can help you watch or temporarily restrict activity.

USAGov also advises reviewing statements and reporting suspicious transactions in its identity theft guidance. These are US sources; issuer procedures and legal protections vary by country and card type. Outside the US, contact your own issuer and follow local reporting guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does covering my PIN make a suspicious ATM safe?

No. Covering the keypad may help block a camera’s view of your PIN, but it does not prevent a compromised reader from capturing card data. Avoid an ATM that looks altered.

Should I use an outdoor ATM instead?

Prefer a well-lit indoor ATM when practical, but neither indoor nor outdoor placement guarantees safety. Inspect the machine and leave if anything appears unusual.
