Yes, you can use Docker/OCI images with Termux, but on a typical non-root Android phone the practical route is PRoot-Distro—not Docker Engine. PRoot-Distro can install an image-based Linux userland and run its commands or entrypoint without a Docker daemon. That is useful for compatible software, but it does not provide Docker Engine’s kernel-backed container isolation. If you need a real Docker daemon or its kernel features, use a conventional Linux host, locally or remotely.
What “running Docker with Termux” can mean
Termux is an Android app environment that runs programs using Android’s host kernel and Android’s Bionic libraries; it is not a Linux virtual machine by default. Some ordinary Linux programs therefore need porting, while others can be run in a separate Linux userland. Termux’s execution-environment documentation explains this distinction.
For a typical non-root device, the Termux project documents PRoot-Distro as a way to install Docker/OCI images and run their commands or entrypoints without root, a kernel module, or a Docker daemon. This gives you access to compatible image-based software, but it is not equivalent to Docker Engine: PRoot-Distro does not turn the Android app into a normal Docker host.

Install a Linux userland with PRoot-Distro
Install Termux using the project’s F-Droid or GitHub release distribution, then run these commands in Termux. The example uses the Ubuntu 24.04 tag shown in the project README; available tags can change, so check the search results and command help on your device.

pkg install proot-distro— installs PRoot-Distro and itsprootdependency.proot-distro search ubuntu— lists available Ubuntu distributions and tags.proot-distro install ubuntu:24.04— installs the selected userland.proot-distro login ubuntu— opens a shell in it.
To run a single command inside the installed userland without opening an interactive shell, use proot-distro login ubuntu -- /bin/uname -a. These are the project’s documented examples; consult the current PRoot-Distro README for updated command syntax and available distributions.
Run an OCI/Docker image rather than a distribution
PRoot-Distro also documents installing an OCI/Docker image from a registry or extracting one from an archive. The basic workflow is different from managing containers with Docker Engine: use proot-distro install IMAGE to install an image, then proot-distro run CONTAINER to run it. The run command uses the image’s recorded entrypoint and command when its manifest includes them. Check the project README for the exact image and archive syntax supported by the current release.

For processes that should continue after the command returns, PRoot-Distro documents a detached mode. Its README also describes listing processes with proot-distro ps, stopping one with proot-distro kill, and redirecting ports with --redirect-ports. These are PRoot-Distro features; they should not be read as a promise of full Docker Engine behavior or isolation.

The key difference is how execution and isolation work. PRoot-Distro runs without a Docker daemon, and its documented Dockerfile RUN steps execute under PRoot rather than BuildKit. The project says those build steps do not have PID, network, or IPC isolation, cgroups, or seccomp. BuildKit-only features such as RUN --mount, RUN --network, and RUN --security are rejected.

The README also documents limits involving zstd-compressed image layers, private-registry credentials, pushing images for only one architecture, and service supervisors. These are compatibility constraints, not proof that no server process can run: the project supports detached entrypoints and provides examples of server software. Check your specific image, architecture, and service requirements before relying on it.
Choose the right approach for your workload

If you want to administer containers from the phone, a remote Linux host is an option: Termux can serve as the client while Docker Engine runs on that host. Choose and secure the host independently; the documentation cited here does not establish a particular provider or service recommendation.

Why the Termux Docker image is not a Termux installer
The Termux project’s termux-docker repository packages a Termux environment as a Docker image. Its README says it requires an already configured Docker or Podman container system to run; it is not a recipe for installing a native Docker daemon inside ordinary Termux. The project also describes architecture considerations, including QEMU/binfmt setup and possible seccomp or personality() constraints for incompatible architectures. See the termux-docker README.
Podman’s official installation page lists its documented installation environments and describes Podman machines backed by a VM on Mac and WSLv2 on Windows, but does not list Android/Termux as a supported install target. That does not rule out every experimental workaround; it means the official page does not establish ordinary Termux as a supported target. Podman installation instructions.
