Yes—but Google Drive stores the audio; it does not send it to YouTube Live by itself. Make the file available on a computer, play it through streaming software such as OBS Studio, and send that encoder’s output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. A Drive sharing link alone is not an established direct input for YouTube Live.
What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- The podcast audio file accessible from your computer, either through Google Drive for desktop or as a local copy.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio to play the file and send the resulting stream to YouTube.
- A visual scene for the outgoing video. The official encoder guidance describes a live feed, not a special audio-only YouTube Live mode, so plan an intentional visual rather than assuming audio by itself will create a complete livestream.
Set up the podcast livestream with Drive and OBS
- Make the file available to the computer. With Google Drive for desktop, you can stream files from a virtual drive or mirror them to a local folder. Streaming uses less local disk space, but depends on Drive for desktop and a reliable internet connection. Mirroring stores a local copy that remains available offline, but uses disk space. Google Drive for desktop file-streaming and mirroring options.
- Prepare an OBS scene. Open OBS, select or create a scene, then use Sources → + → Media Source. Select the audio file from the computer. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV playback through a Media Source. Turn on Loop if you want the file to repeat after it ends; leave it off for a one-time episode. OBS Media Sources.
- Give the audio a suitable visual. Add a relevant still image, title card, or other appropriate video content to the scene. Check that the visual and audio are both present in the OBS preview. If you use artwork, confirm you have the rights to use it in a livestream.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as private: YouTube describes it as the credential that tells YouTube where the feed is coming from. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the incoming preview has sound and the intended visual before you go live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; its encoder settings documentation lists AAC and MP3 among supported audio codec options for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommended encoder settings.
- Go live and monitor playback. Once the preview and audio are correct, start the broadcast from YouTube Studio if the stream is not set to go live automatically. Keep an eye on stream health and listen for interruptions or unexpected silence.
Drive link versus a file OBS can play
Drive is the storage location in this setup, not the encoder. The documented route is to make the file available on the computer and have OBS play it as a local media source. The cited documentation does not establish that pasting a Google Drive sharing URL into YouTube or OBS will work as a native live audio input. Google Drive for desktop options; OBS Media Sources.
Choose streaming from Drive when you want to conserve local disk space and can rely on a stable connection. Choose mirroring or a local copy when you want playback to remain available if Drive access or connectivity fails. In either case, test the actual file in OBS before the scheduled broadcast.
Rights and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to use the podcast audio and any visuals in a livestream. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifically advises creators to ensure they have audio and video rights. YouTube encoder setup guidance.

For one episode or a continuous schedule?
For a single episode, a computer running OBS is a straightforward way to play a Drive-accessible file and send it to YouTube. For a recurring schedule or unattended 24/7 programming, consider whether you want to manage playback, connectivity, and recovery on a computer yourself or use a cloud service built for continuous pre-recorded YouTube streams. YouTube’s encoder help lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 pre-recorded video streams, but that listing does not establish Google Drive audio support. YouTube encoder help.

Troubleshooting
- OBS cannot find or open the audio: Confirm that the Drive file is available on the computer, not just visible as a sharing link. If you use Drive’s streaming mode, check that Drive for desktop is running and the connection is stable; alternatively, mirror or download the file and select the local copy.
- The YouTube preview has no sound: Verify the Media Source points to the correct file, check OBS audio meters and output settings, and listen to the preview before going live. Confirm the file is in a format OBS documents for Media Source playback, such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV.
- The episode stops at the end: Enable Loop in the Media Source if you intend it to repeat. If you want a sequence of episodes rather than one repeated file, test your chosen playlist workflow before the broadcast.
- YouTube receives no stream: Recheck that you copied the matching server URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room stream into OBS. If necessary, refresh or replace the stream key in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Keep the key private.
- You cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Playback drops while using Drive streaming: A streamed file depends on connectivity and Drive for desktop. Improve connection reliability or switch to a mirrored/offline copy to remove Drive access as a playback dependency.
