Yes, but only if your laptop stays awake, powered, connected to the internet, and keeps its encoder running when the lid is closed. Windows lets you configure the lid action on many devices. On a Mac, closing the display normally puts the laptop to sleep; a closed-display setup requires supported external equipment and conditions. Test your exact laptop and setup before trusting it with a continuous stream.
What has to stay working
A laptop can run streaming software that sends video to YouTube, but the lid being closed does not itself guarantee that the stream will continue. The computer must remain awake, the encoder must remain connected, and the internet connection must sustain the upload. YouTube documents computer-based streaming with software encoders, but that is not a guarantee that a particular laptop can handle a 24-hour workload.
There is no universal laptop temperature, endurance rating, or 24/7 reliability specification established by the official guidance cited here. Device model, operating system, power settings, network stability, and workload all matter.

Windows
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not put the laptop to sleep, if that choice is available.
- Connect the laptop to reliable AC power, then test that closing the lid does not suspend the computer or interrupt the encoder.
Many Windows laptops sleep when the lid closes, and the available choices can vary by device. See Microsoft’s guidance on power states and lid behavior.

Mac
Assume that closing a Mac laptop’s display puts it to sleep unless you are using an Apple-supported closed-display configuration. Apple’s cited instructions for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M3 require an external display, external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and power. The specified minimum macOS versions are Sonoma 14.3 for MacBook Air and 14.6 for MacBook Pro. Other models may have different requirements; check Apple’s instructions for your model rather than assuming the same setup applies.

Check YouTube access and stream settings
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and activate streaming before scheduling a test or relying on the laptop for a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup and eligibility guidance.

Match upload capacity to the stream
Use settings that your internet connection can sustain, not just settings the encoder allows. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, its encoder table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube recommendations for that format, not a promise that a connection will remain stable. Different resolutions, frame rates, and codecs call for different settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and test the actual connection.

Run and monitor a test stream
- Set up the encoder and connect it to the intended YouTube stream.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream and confirm that video and audio appear in YouTube’s preview.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and watch for dropped frames, buffering, or audio problems.
- Close the lid using the configuration you plan to use, then confirm the stream remains live and the encoder stays connected.
- Continue monitoring during operation; a successful initial test does not establish that a laptop or network will remain reliable indefinitely.
YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring it while live. Its guidance is available in the encoder setup and stream health documentation.
Plan for the 24-hour archive limitation
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise an automatic archive for a 24-hour stream. If keeping the whole feed matters, arrange a separate local recording or consider shorter stream sessions, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before broadcasting. For any approach, decide whether you are broadcasting live camera or production, or looping prerecorded material; whether a closed-lid computer will stay awake; how much sustained upload capacity your target quality needs; whether you need a continuous local archive; and how you will notice and recover from an interruption.
