Possibly, but the laptop’s age alone cannot answer the question. It depends on whether that specific machine can encode your chosen video continuously without overheating or dropping frames, and whether your internet connection can sustain the stream with upload headroom. YouTube does not publish a minimum laptop specification for this workload. Test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.
What you need to check before going live
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to activate, and YouTube’s current guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check eligibility and activation before scheduling. - Decide whether you are broadcasting live yoga content or looping prerecorded footage. This article’s laptop-encoding advice applies to a prerecorded relaxation stream sent through streaming software; the laptop must remain on, connected, and able to encode for the broadcast to continue.
- Check the video and audio rights before streaming. You need the necessary rights for the content, including music rights, and a license for a track may not automatically cover a YouTube livestream or its archive.
- Plan separately for electricity, cooling, internet reliability, and whether you need a complete recording. Being in India does not establish your local ISP performance or power reliability.

Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates include the following. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that an old laptop can encode at the listed settings.

Use the current encoder table when setting up, since YouTube’s recommendations can change. Start at a modest resolution and frame rate that the computer can handle; if the stream is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends matching the setting to your connection and encoder.

Measure upload bandwidth, not download speed
YouTube recommends having upload bandwidth at least 20% higher than the stream’s total bitrate. For a single 6 Mbps stream, that simple headroom calculation means at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity. Other people or devices using the connection can reduce what is available to the stream, so test at the location and during the hours you expect to broadcast. The National Informatics Centre’s webcast guidance gives 2–4 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth per stream for its own webcast service. Test the old laptop before depending on it
- Prepare the exact stream. Use the yoga footage and relaxation audio you intend to broadcast, including representative movement and sound. A static desktop test does not reveal how the intended video will perform.
- Set a conservative encoder profile. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the laptop and measured upload connection can sustain. Keep the 20% upload headroom above total stream bitrate.
- Run a sustained test and monitor it. Watch YouTube’s stream health and your encoder’s status for dropped frames, interruptions, audio/video problems, and signs that the laptop is becoming unstable or overheating. - Repeat after changing settings. If the machine or network struggles, lower the settings and test the revised setup rather than assuming a brief successful start proves it can run continuously.
- Plan for local failure points. The laptop still depends on power, cooling, and the home internet connection. Appropriate backup power may help with local power interruptions, but it cannot guarantee that the ISP service stays available.
Understand the 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube archive. If retaining the footage matters, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup. Clear the yoga video and audio rights
Use only footage and audio for which you have the necessary rights for the intended livestream and territory. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn you, and continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have licensed music, the rights-holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. When to use a cloud option instead
If the laptop cannot sustain encoding, lower the settings and retest. If the program is prerecorded and you cannot keep a computer or home connection online, a cloud encoder or playout service is another approach.
