A computer power button can be replaced, but the right procedure depends on whether you have a desktop or laptop—and on the exact model. A desktop button often connects to the motherboard through a cable; a laptop may use a separate button board or an assembly that is harder to access. First confirm that the button is the likely fault, then follow the service manual for your computer before opening it.
First check whether the power button is actually the problem
A computer that will not start does not automatically have a faulty button. The case switch or its wires are one possible cause, but Intel’s troubleshooting guidance covers other power-related causes too. Use Intel’s “Why Won’t My Computer Turn On?” troubleshooting steps to narrow down the issue, and consult the motherboard manual to identify the switch header on a desktop.
Do not bridge motherboard pins or probe a powered system based on general instructions. The cited guidance does not establish a universal pinout or a safe test method for every computer. If the diagnosis is uncertain, seek model-specific support rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
Identify the button design and the correct replacement
Before buying a part or disassembling the computer, identify its exact model and find its service manual. Determine whether the suspected part is a desktop case switch and cable, a laptop power-button board, or a more integrated assembly. A replacement must match the computer or case, including its connectors and mounting; a generic desktop switch is suitable only if the fault is isolated to a compatible switch or cable.
#1 Best Overall
- External Desktop PC Power Button – Ideal for home use, computer labs, barebone systems, and custom chassis builds. If your PC case is placed in a hard-to-reach location, this extension switch allows you to relocate the power button for easy access and convenient operation.
- Easy Sticker Installation: Simply connect the POWER SW, RESET SW, POWER LED, and HDD LED cables to the corresponding motherboard headers, then secure the button in place using the adhesive sticker.
- Replacement Solution for Damaged Chassis Power Button If your PC case’s built-in power button is faulty, this external switch is an excellent replacement. The wiring can be easily routed through various openings, such as: front panel optical drive bay, rear panel fan vent, back panel expansion slot
- Comes with 1 to 2 splitter boards & splitter cables: The small 1-to-2 splitter allows the power button to work alongside your original one. If space is limited, use the included 1-to-2 splitter cable instead.
- Package included: 1x Computer Power Switch ON/OFF with 2M cable; 1x 1 to 2 splitter board; 1x 1 to 2 splitter cable; 1x adhesive stickers; 1x installation manua.
- Desktop: The button is commonly connected to a motherboard front-panel header by a cable. A replacement cable or button may be practical when that component is confirmed faulty and is compatible with the case.
- Laptop: The button may be mounted on a separate board or integrated into another assembly. Use the exact model or service tag to verify the part and its part number; do not assume a universal laptop button fits.
- Access: Check how many components the manual requires you to remove. If the work calls for extensive disassembly or steps outside your experience, use qualified repair support.
Replacing a desktop power button
Desktop layouts differ, so use the instructions for your own machine. Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P520c guide provides one example: the button cable is disconnected from the system board, the button is released from the front bezel, and the replacement is installed and reconnected. It is not a universal teardown sequence.
- Prepare safely. Shut down the computer, turn off connected devices, and disconnect the power cord and other cables. Read the manufacturer’s safety guidance before opening the case. Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P520c User Guide and ThinkCentre M920t instructions both emphasize preparation and safety; your computer’s manual takes precedence.
- Open the computer as its manual directs. A documented P520c procedure removes the front bezel to access the button. Another desktop procedure may require removing the cover or other components first.
- Locate and disconnect the button cable. Identify the cable and its system-board connector using the model’s documentation, then disconnect it as directed. Do not rely on a generic header pinout.
- Remove the old button and install the compatible replacement. Release it from its mounting point or bezel according to the manual. Avoid forcing the button or connector.
- Reconnect and reassemble. Reconnect the cable, reinstall the bezel and any removed components, and complete the model’s reassembly steps before reconnecting power.
If you have not confirmed that the switch or cable is faulty, pause before ordering a generic “2-pin PC case power switch cable.” Connector and mounting compatibility are not universal.

Replacing a laptop power button
Do not apply desktop front-panel-header instructions to a laptop. Access requirements vary by model, and a button may be part of a board or a larger assembly.
- Dell Inspiron 7490: Dell’s power-button removal procedure lists several preceding removals, including the base cover, battery, applicable fan, and I/O board. That is a model-specific access path, not a general laptop procedure.
- Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3567): The power-button-board procedure describes a separate board and cable. It includes battery removal, releasing the cable latch, disconnecting the cable, removing a screw and tape, and lifting the board.
- Older HP designs: HP’s Maintenance and Service Guide documents a switch-cover/power-button-board assembly and instructs users to disconnect AC power and the adapter before the procedure. Its instructions apply to the models covered by that guide, not all HP laptops.
Follow the exact service manual, including its safety warnings and prerequisites. If access involves extensive disassembly, or you are unsure how to release a cable latch or connector, stop and arrange qualified repair.

When to choose professional repair
Repair support is the safer choice when you cannot confirm the failed component, cannot find a service procedure for the exact model, or the manual requires disassembly beyond your skill level. This is especially relevant when the button is part of a larger assembly rather than a separately replaceable switch. A technician can also help distinguish a button fault from another power problem before parts are replaced.
