Claude can be the better assistant for a particular task, but that does not make it dependable enough to be your only route when a deadline matters. Service availability and answer quality are separate questions: outages can interrupt access or work, while outage records do not tell you which model performs better on your task. Keep important work recoverable and have a fallback ready.

Has Claude gone down, and what happened?

Anthropic’s status page recorded an incident on September 29, 2026 affecting Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and some Claude API requests. The reported impact ran from 14:00 to 14:59 UTC. Anthropic cautioned that some messages sent during that hour may not have been saved. That is evidence of a real interruption and a possible work-continuity problem, not a measure of Claude’s annual uptime. Anthropic’s status incident records

The status page also lists other model-specific and platform incidents in early October 2026. A status page is useful for checking conditions and reviewing reported events, but incident counts alone do not produce a fair uptime comparison: providers may define and report incidents differently, and the affected products can vary.

Is Claude more reliable than ChatGPT?

The strongest cited comparison is historical rather than a current reliability ranking. A 2025 empirical study by Chu, Talluri, Lu, and Iosup examined public services from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Character.AI over February 2023 through August 2024. In that period, the authors recorded Anthropic incidents more frequently on average, but found that they were resolved faster. They summarize the comparison this way: “Failures in OpenAI’s ChatGPT take longer to resolve but occur less frequently than those in Anthropic’s Claude.” Read the study by Chu, Talluri, Lu, and Iosup

The study reports average Anthropic mean time between failures of 5.22 days and average mean time to recovery of 2.70 hours. For OpenAI, it reports incidents occurring every 8.48 days on average. These figures describe the researchers’ dataset and period; they are not service-level guarantees and cannot establish which service is more reliable today. The paper also reports better failure isolation for OpenAI services. Its authors observed Anthropic availability declining after April 2024 and suggested product releases and rising demand as possible explanations, but did not establish those as causes.

There is no supported current, apples-to-apples 2026 ranking here that establishes whether Claude, ChatGPT, or another assistant is categorically more reliable. OpenAI notes that its availability metrics aggregate across tiers, models, and error types, and that an individual customer’s availability can vary by subscription tier, model, and API features. What does “reliable” mean for an AI assistant?

Reliability is not one number. A useful comparison separates whether you can access a service from whether its answers are good and whether your work survives a disruption.

  • Availability: Can you reach the website, app, or API when you need it?
  • Incident frequency: How often are disruptions reported over a defined period, using comparable data?
  • Recovery time: How long do interruptions last?
  • Scope and isolation: Does a failure affect one model or feature, or several products and routes?
  • Work continuity: Can you recover prompts, files, drafts, and outputs if access fails?
  • Task performance: Does the model produce accurate, useful work for your specific job? Outage statistics cannot answer this; it requires task-specific evaluation.

Anthropic’s February 2026 risk report discusses model performance separately from service uptime. On an uncontaminated math benchmark, it reports a no-chain-of-thought 50%-reliability time horizon for Claude Opus 4.5 and Opus 4.6 of about 3.3 minutes with five problem repeats and 2.4 minutes without repeats. This narrow benchmark result is not a general consumer reliability score, a measure of uptime, or a prediction of performance on other tasks. Anthropic’s research and risk reports

How can you make Claude safer to use for important work?

Use Claude as one part of a workflow that can survive an interruption. These steps are practical precautions prompted by documented service disruptions and the possibility of unsaved messages, not guarantees from any provider.

  1. Keep a copy outside the chat. Draft in a document or other storage you control, and save useful outputs as you go.
  2. Preserve the inputs. Keep the prompt, source files, notes, and relevant context somewhere you can access without the conversation.
  3. Choose a fallback before a deadline. Identify another provider, an internal tool, or a non-AI way to complete the essential work. Know where to resume if Claude is unavailable.
  4. Verify critical results independently. Check factual, financial, legal, technical, or operational outputs against authoritative sources or qualified review rather than treating a successful response as proof of correctness.
  5. Check live status when access fails. Consult Anthropic’s status page to see whether a reported incident may explain the problem; if your work cannot wait, switch to the fallback rather than waiting without a plan.
