Sometimes—but recovery depends on whether the deleted file’s data has been overwritten. Stop using the USB drive or memory card immediately, and save any recovered files to a different disk or partition. TestDisk can use leftover FAT directory information to locate deleted files; PhotoRec offers a different, signature-based approach when that information is unavailable, but it does not retain original filenames or folder structure.

What “Taphonomy” means here

“Taphonomy” is an editorial framing for cautious FAT32 recovery, not an identified recovery program. The documentation cited here describes TestDisk, PhotoRec and Microsoft Windows File Recovery; it does not establish a software project called Taphonomy or document its capabilities. This guide therefore makes no claim that a Taphonomy tool has been tested or guarantees recovery.

Why a deleted FAT32 file may still be recoverable

When a file is deleted from a FAT filesystem, its directory entry is marked deleted and its data area is marked unallocated. The remaining directory information may let TestDisk find where the file began. The contents are recoverable only if the relevant data area has not been overwritten or reused. CGSecurity’s TestDisk FAT undelete documentation puts the condition plainly: “If the data area hasn’t been overwritten by a new file, the file is recoverable.” That describes a condition, not a guarantee that every file can be restored.

What to do first: stop writes to the source

  1. Stop using the affected drive or card. Do not save, copy, download or install anything onto it. TestDisk advises leaving the media unused until recovery is complete.
  2. Prepare a separate destination. Copy recovered files to another partition or disk—not back to the source filesystem. A separate external drive is one option; choose one with enough capacity for the files you hope to recover.
  3. Choose a recovery method. Start with filesystem-based undelete when preserving directory information and names matters; consider file carving if that method does not locate the files.

These precautions matter because new writes can reuse space marked unallocated, including space that still contains the deleted file’s data. TestDisk’s documentation and download page recommends copying recovered files to a different partition or disk; CGSecurity gives the same essential destination warning for PhotoRec in its PhotoRec documentation.

Which recovery method fits your situation?

Method How it works Important trade-off
TestDisk undelete Uses remaining FAT directory information to locate where a deleted file began. Most relevant when the directory entry remains and the data area has not been reused. Save recovered files to another partition or disk.
PhotoRec Carves files by recognizing file signatures rather than relying on the original directory entry. Can help when other methods fail, including with corrupted filesystems, but does not preserve original filenames or folder structure. Use a separate destination filesystem.
Windows File Recovery Microsoft’s command-line recovery app. Microsoft lists FAT and exFAT support through Extensive mode. Check current Windows compatibility and app availability before relying on it.

The approaches are not interchangeable. TestDisk relies on surviving filesystem directory information; PhotoRec searches for file signatures and sacrifices the original names and organization. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance identifies Extensive mode for FAT and exFAT. It also advises minimizing or avoiding computer use when attempting recovery.

How to choose a path

  • Names and folders matter: try TestDisk first if the deleted directory information may remain.
  • TestDisk does not find the files, or the filesystem is damaged: PhotoRec is an alternative if you can work with recovered files that may not have their original names or folder structure.
  • You prefer Microsoft’s command-line app: Windows File Recovery is documented for FAT and exFAT through Extensive mode; verify compatibility and availability for your current Windows setup.
  • You suspect the media has been used since deletion: recovery may be impossible if the relevant data was overwritten. None of these methods can restore data that is no longer present.
  • You have nowhere else to save recovered output: obtain or identify a different partition or disk before writing recovery results.

The cited documentation does not provide recovery-rate statistics or establish a universal best method. The practical choice depends on whether directory information survives, whether original names and folders matter, whether the data may have been overwritten and whether a safe destination is available.

What to expect from PhotoRec

PhotoRec is useful when recovery based on filesystem information is unsuccessful, but its signature-based method does not reconstruct the original directory structure or filenames. CGSecurity’s PhotoRec documentation says: “PhotoRec doesn’t recover the original filenames or the file structure but it can recover lost files even from corrupted filesystem.” Treat that as a description of the tool’s approach, not a promise that a particular file will be found.
