Yes—but only for selected games, and the route matters. PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but it does not read PS3 discs. Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible Switch games, while selected older Nintendo titles are available through Nintendo Switch Online. Both platforms also offer some older games through subscriptions, downloads, or streaming. Check the exact game, format, and local availability before buying a console or subscription.
What “playing an older game” can mean
There are several different ways to revisit a game, and they are not interchangeable:
- Use original media: insert a disc or cartridge, if the console supports that format and title.
- Use an existing digital license: download a compatible game you already own, subject to the platform and account rules.
- Buy a current release: purchase a newer edition, remaster, or remake made for the current console.
- Download from a subscription catalog: access a selected game while it remains available under an eligible plan.
- Stream a game: play it over the internet where streaming and that title are supported. This does not make the original disc compatible.
For any route, confirm the specific title and your country’s availability rather than assuming an entire console generation is supported.

Yes. PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. A small number may show errors or lose some functionality, so Sony advises checking the title and trying it before purchasing add-ons. See PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance.

Using a PS4 disc
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. A disc cannot be used on a digital-only PS5. If you own the digital PS4 version, compatibility is a separate matter from having a disc drive; check the game against Sony’s support guidance.
Expect title-specific differences
Compatibility does not guarantee identical performance or features in every game. Sony notes that some titles can have errors or missing functionality. A game may also have a separate PS5 edition or upgrade, but that is distinct from simply playing the PS4 version.
PS VR accessories
For PS VR games played through PS5 backward compatibility, Sony specifies that the supported VR headset and PS4 camera are required, along with the camera adapter. Sony recommends a DualShock 4 for the best PS VR experience. Check the accessory requirements for the particular game on Sony’s compatibility page.

Can PS5 play PS3, PS2, or original PlayStation discs?
PS5 does not support PS3 discs. Putting a PS3 disc into a disc-drive PS5 is not a way to play the game.

Some older PlayStation games are offered through current releases or PlayStation Plus catalog access, but this is a title-by-title alternative—not universal support for original discs. Sony’s May 2022 service guide describes selected original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS4, and PS5 games as available for streaming through Premium in select markets. It also describes downloadable original PlayStation, PSP, PS4, and PS5 games, plus downloadable PS2 and PS3 remasters or remakes. These options depend on the plan, market, and title; check the current local catalog. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide is dated and should not be treated as a current catalog guarantee.
In particular, streaming a selected PS3 game through PlayStation Plus is different from running a PS3 disc on PS5.
Will your Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles are unsupported or may have compatibility issues. There is no single overall compatibility percentage in Nintendo’s guidance. Look up the game in Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information before relying on a particular cartridge or digital purchase.
Physical and digital copies
Nintendo’s compatibility overview covers both physical and digital Switch software. Having the correct format does not guarantee that every game works; the individual title’s compatibility status is what matters.

Updated editions and accessories
Some games may have Switch 2 upgrade packs or updated performance, which are separate from basic compatibility. Accessories also vary: some older Nintendo accessories cannot attach to or work with Joy-Con 2, while original Switch Joy-Con may pair wirelessly for supported uses. Check Nintendo’s title and accessory details for the configuration you plan to use.

For games from systems older than Switch, the usual route is Nintendo’s selected classic-game libraries rather than inserting original media. Nintendo Switch Online provides access to classic titles, with the available systems and games depending on the library, membership tier, hardware, and region.
Nintendo’s current UK classic-games page lists libraries for NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube. The page distinguishes Expansion Pack access and Switch 2-specific availability. That UK list should not be read as a promise that every system, game, or membership option is available in every country. Check the current listing for your region and plan at Nintendo’s classic games page.

Check these details before you buy
- Identify the exact game and original system. “PlayStation game” or “Nintendo game” is too broad to establish compatibility.
- Identify what you own. Note whether it is a disc, cartridge, digital license, or no existing copy; then check whether the current console supports that route.
- Check the official compatibility entry and hardware requirements. For discs, confirm the console has the required drive. Check any controller, camera, or other accessory requirements too.
- If direct play is unavailable, look for a separate route. Check for a current-console release, remaster, remake, subscription catalog entry, or stream option in your country.
- Confirm the terms now. Subscription lineups, supported titles, membership tiers, and regional availability can change.
