Sometimes—but simply reposting someone else’s footage is not eligible for Shorts revenue sharing. YouTube lists unedited movie or TV clips, reuploads of other creators’ videos, and compilations with no original additions as non-original Shorts. Footage may be eligible under the reused-content policy when your own commentary, substantial editing, or clear educational or entertainment contribution makes your work meaningfully distinct. That is not a guarantee: YouTube reviews the channel as a whole, and copyright clearance is a separate issue.
Which Shorts made with clips are ineligible?
YouTube explicitly treats unedited third-party clips, reuploads, and compilations without original additions as non-original content that does not qualify for Shorts revenue sharing. That applies whether the source is a movie, a TV show, or another creator’s upload. Short duration, a trending sound, or credit in the description does not by itself turn a repost into original work.

When can reused footage be eligible?
YouTube’s channel monetization policy describes reused content as material repurposed from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. It gives examples that may be allowed, including critical reviews, reaction videos with commentary, and edited footage presented with a new storyline and commentary. The key is that viewers and reviewers can identify the creator’s own contribution—not just the borrowed footage.

Examples of stronger original contributions
- Critical review: Use only the footage needed to make a point, then explain what you are criticizing and why.
- Reaction with commentary: Add a meaningful spoken or otherwise clear response that analyzes or contextualizes the source, rather than silently replaying it.
- New story or explanation: Restructure clips around a distinct narrative or educational point, supported by your own commentary.
The policy does not set a universal number of edits, seconds of commentary, or percentage of original footage that guarantees approval. Captions, cropping, borders, a new music bed, or a reaction face are not automatic proof of meaningful transformation; reviewers assess the substance and clarity of the contribution.

Does permission, credit, or the absence of a copyright claim make it monetizable?
No. Reused-content monetization review is separate from copyright enforcement and is not decided by whether you have permission, received a copyright claim, or believe your use is fair. A permission grant or credit may address a rights question, but it does not establish that your channel adds enough original value to qualify for monetization.
The reverse is also important: passing reused-content review does not establish that you have the rights to use the footage. Copyright clearance and monetization eligibility are separate checks.

How does YouTube review a channel?
Reused-content review is channel-wide, not just a pass-or-fail test for one Short. Reviewers may consider videos, titles, descriptions, the channel description, the overall theme, and other context to understand who made the content and what original value the channel provides. A channel dominated by interchangeable compilations can therefore face monetization risk even if some individual uploads contain edits.
Make your authorship and contribution easy to recognize throughout the channel. If your monetization status is unclear or a decision needs attention, check the account-specific status and guidance in YouTube Studio.

What else must be true to earn Shorts revenue?
Originality alone does not qualify a video or channel for payment. YouTube says monetizing partners must accept the Shorts Monetization Module; views accrued before acceptance are not eligible for Shorts ad revenue sharing. Content must also meet advertiser-friendly requirements, and fake, non-original, or advertiser-ineligible views do not count as eligible engaged views.
Shorts Feed ads are handled separately from long-form Watch Page monetization. YouTube pools Shorts Feed ad revenue, calculates a Creator Pool based on engaged views and music usage, and allocates it among monetizing creators according to their share of eligible engaged views by country. The creator share is 45% of the amount allocated to that creator—not 45% of all ads shown around a particular Short. YouTube’s policy illustrates the music calculation with hypothetical examples: for a Short using one music track, half of its engaged-view revenue allocation goes to the Creator Pool and the remainder covers music licensing; with two tracks, one third goes to the Creator Pool and two thirds to music licensing. The policy page checked on October 4, 2026 states that a threshold of 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days is scheduled to begin February 1, 2027, for a share of the Creator Pool and YouTube Premium revenue. That is a future-dated requirement, not a threshold to describe as already effective on October 4, 2026. Confirm current eligibility and local YouTube Partner Program availability in the official Shorts monetization policies and your YouTube Studio account.

A practical check before posting a clip-based Short
- Identify the source and rights basis. Confirm that you have the necessary rights or another defensible basis for using the material; this does not replace the monetization review.
- Make your original contribution central. Add clear criticism, analysis, explanation, or a distinct narrative rather than relying on cosmetic edits.
- Check the channel pattern. Look at the channel as a whole: repeated, interchangeable clip compilations may undermine the case that it offers distinct original value.
- Check revenue conditions. Confirm YPP eligibility and account status, accept the Shorts Monetization Module if you are a monetizing partner, and ensure the content and views meet applicable requirements.
