Sometimes, but simply rebroadcasting other people’s videos is a poor bet for YouTube monetization. You need to clear two separate hurdles: your stream must add enough original value to meet YouTube’s reused-content rules, and you must have the rights needed to use the videos. Permission alone does not guarantee monetization, and original commentary alone does not resolve copyright concerns.

Why there are two separate hurdles

YouTube’s reused-content review asks whether the channel adds significant original commentary, substantive changes, or educational or entertainment value to material taken from YouTube or another online source. The policy applies to live streams and is assessed at the channel level. Reviewers may consider the channel’s videos, description, and metadata. If the channel does not appear to be creating its own work, monetization can be removed across the channel. YouTube channel monetization policies

Copyright is a different question: whether you have the rights needed to use the video. YouTube’s live-stream terms require those rights, and its systems scan live streams for third-party matches. A stream may be interrupted even when you have a license. Copyright issues with live streams Livestream terms and conditions

YouTube explicitly says reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement and is not based on permission or fair use. That is a platform-policy distinction, not a legal determination about whether a particular use is lawful.

How the answer changes by format

Stream format Monetization outlook What still matters
Unchanged rebroadcast of other people’s videos Poor fit: it adds little original value and is likely to struggle under reused-content review. You still need rights, and live matching can interrupt the stream.
Reaction or critical-review stream with meaningful commentary More plausible: YouTube lists commentary-led reaction videos and clips used for critical review as examples that may meet its reused-content policy. Examples are not guarantees. You need rights or another valid basis to use the material, and copyright matching still applies. YouTube’s policy examples
Licensed video shown with little or no transformation A license does not by itself make the stream sufficiently original for reused-content monetization review. Confirm the license covers the intended use; ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting.
Licensed video in a substantial original presentation A more plausible route, but no format guarantees approval. Confirm rights for live and archived uses, ask about allowlisting, and meet current YouTube Partner Program requirements.

What a license does—and does not—solve

A license can address authorization to use content within its terms; it does not automatically satisfy the separate originality test. Check that the license covers livestreaming, the territories where you plan to show the content, and any archived replay. For an individual situation, confirm the scope with the rights holder rather than assuming a license for one use covers another.

YouTube advises creators who license third-party material to ask the owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. Without that step, a live stream can still be interrupted, including when the creator has a license or limits the stream to territories where they hold rights. What happens when YouTube detects a match

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. A license does not ensure that automated matching will be avoided, so allowlisting is an important step to discuss with the rights holder.

Monetization still requires YouTube Partner Program eligibility

Even if your format is original enough and your rights are in order, you must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program and follow its policies. Eligible partners can earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue on live streams after accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module. These monetization options do not override copyright requirements or the reused-content policy. YouTube channel monetization policies

A practical checklist before going live

  • Make the original contribution clear. Build the stream around substantial commentary, criticism, or another meaningful educational or entertainment contribution, not just continuous playback.
  • Check rights for each use. Confirm that you can use the material in a live stream and, if applicable, its archived replay; do not assume permission for one format covers both.
  • Ask about Content ID allowlisting. If you have licensed the videos, ask the owner to allowlist your channel to reduce the risk of a live interruption.
  • Review the channel as a whole. Your stream is not evaluated in isolation; the channel’s videos, description, and metadata may also inform a reused-content review.
  • Meet YPP requirements. Confirm that you are accepted and have enabled the relevant monetization module before relying on live-stream revenue.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you have a rights-cleared, original video program and want it to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud: upload it, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not create rights or make reused content eligible for monetization, so the same copyright and originality checks still apply. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
