Yes, but only in carrier- and phone-specific ways. T-Mobile currently describes picture messaging, selected low-bandwidth app data, and WhatsApp voice over T-Satellite. Verizon’s documented Skylo feature supports basic text messaging and text-based emergency SOS, not photos, general app data, or calls. AT&T describes broader voice, data, and text service with AST SpaceMobile as planned, without a specific consumer launch date.
What carrier satellite service can do today
Carrier satellite service extends a mobile network to compatible phones in places without ordinary cellular coverage. It is not a universal satellite mode that turns any phone into a full-speed cell connection: the functions depend on the carrier, phone, software, plan, location, and satellite conditions.

Can you make calls over satellite?
T-Mobile: app-based voice through WhatsApp
T-Mobile says WhatsApp voice can work over T-Satellite. That is app-based calling over a satellite data connection, not a promise that ordinary cellular voice calling works through the satellite service. The company describes satellite data as suited to selected optimized apps, with limited capacity and lower speeds; an app may not support all of its usual functions.

Verizon: no calls in the documented Skylo feature
Verizon’s Skylo support page describes basic two-way messaging and SOS texting. It does not document ordinary voice calls or app-based calling through this feature.
AT&T: broader calling is planned, not a current consumer offer
AT&T reports technical milestones with AST SpaceMobile, including a native voice call and text using AT&T spectrum and its core network in July 2025. That milestone is distinct from commercial availability: AT&T’s page does not provide a specific consumer launch date. Its stated design figures—including peak data transmission speeds of up to 120 Mbps—are company design claims, not speeds consumers can currently expect to obtain.
Can you send pictures or use internet data by satellite?
Picture messages depend on the carrier
T-Mobile lists SMS/MMS/RCS picture messaging, along with text and audio messages. Verizon explicitly says MMS, RCS, and attachments are not supported by its Skylo messaging feature. The ability to send a picture on one carrier therefore says nothing about support on another.

Satellite data is not the same as unrestricted broadband
T-Mobile describes access to selected satellite-ready apps and warns that speed and capacity are lower than on cellular service. This is limited app data, not a general promise of broadband browsing or streaming. Apple similarly notes that some operators may allow limited data on selected apps when an iPhone is connected to an operator-provided satellite network; support depends on the operator.
Verizon’s documented Skylo feature is messaging and SOS, not general satellite data. AT&T’s voice, data, and text description is for a planned service, not a currently documented consumer data offer.
Which phones work, and what setup is required?
- T-Mobile: The carrier says most smartphones from the last four years may work, but directs customers to its eligible-device list before relying on service. The service page lists inclusion in Experience Beyond 2.0 and Better Value plans and a limited-time $10-per-month option for other T-Mobile customers and non-customers; check the live page for current eligibility and pricing.
- Verizon: Its listed Android models are Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, S25 Ultra, Z Fold7, and Z Flip7; Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro, 9, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Google Messages must be set as the default messaging app. Verizon says SOS and messaging have no extra fee.
- iPhone operator-provided features: Apple’s guidance calls for iPhone 13 or later, the latest iOS, and a supported operator; some operators may also require a qualifying plan. See Apple’s operator satellite feature guidance.
Check the exact model, software, carrier, plan, and messaging-app requirements on the carrier’s current support page. A phone being technically capable of satellite communication does not guarantee that a particular operator’s service supports it.

Carrier service versus satellite features built into a phone
Carrier-provided satellite connectivity is separate from the satellite features Apple provides on iPhone through Globalstar. Apple says iPhone 14 or later supports its own satellite features—including emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging friends and family, and location sharing—in selected regions. Those capabilities do not establish compatibility with every carrier’s satellite network. Apple’s operator-specific guidance covers a separate set of requirements and services.

Expect to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Verizon specifies satellite line of sight; carrier guidance also warns that messages can be delayed and service may be limited or unavailable. T-Mobile lists coverage in the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, parts of southern Alaska, and a growing number of countries abroad. Satellite emergency features are not guaranteed substitutes for ordinary emergency communications. Verizon’s Satellite SOS is a text connection to 911, and T-Mobile’s satellite Text to 911 is text-only and subject to coverage, delay, and location-accuracy limits. Before leaving cellular coverage, review the phone and carrier’s current emergency instructions and do not assume a message will connect immediately.
How to check whether your carrier will meet your needs
- Name the task: Decide whether you need basic text, picture messages, location sharing, app data, app-based voice, or emergency SOS. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Verify the exact phone and setup: Check the carrier’s current device list, required operating-system version, default messaging app, and any plan requirement.
- Check the location: Confirm the country or region is covered and that you can use the service outdoors with sky visibility.
- Check current plan terms: Confirm whether the feature is included, sold as an add-on, or has no extra fee. Carrier pricing and availability can change.
- Plan for limitations: Assume lower bandwidth, possible delays, and interruptions; do not rely on satellite connectivity as guaranteed access.
What planned satellite-network claims do—and do not—tell you
SpaceX/Starlink said in February 2025 that its Direct to Cell constellation had more than 400 satellites and that millions of messages were sent during 2024 beta testing and emergency scenarios. Those company-reported figures describe the network and earlier testing, not an individual customer’s coverage or service level. AT&T says AST SpaceMobile has signed agreements with more than 50 mobile operators worldwide; agreements do not mean those operators have launched consumer service.
