Yes. You can use two or more SSDs in a PC if it has compatible, available connections. Before buying, check the exact PC or motherboard specifications and manual: M.2 sockets can support different drive interfaces, and using one socket may disable particular SATA ports on some systems.
What to check before adding a second SSD
Find your exact PC model or motherboard model, then consult its official specifications and manual. Count the available SATA connectors and M.2 sockets, and check which drive interfaces and physical sizes they support. “M.2” describes a drive’s form factor, not a guarantee that it will work in every M.2 socket: a socket may support M.2 PCIe, M.2 SATA, or a specified combination. MSI’s SSD installation guide explains the interface and fit checks.
Check whether ports are shared
Some motherboards share resources between M.2 sockets and SATA ports. As one model-specific example, MSI says an M.2 drive in specified interfaces on the MEG Z590 ACE makes SATA2, or SATA5 and SATA6, unavailable. This is not a rule for every motherboard; check the resource-sharing notes or tables in your own manual. MSI describes the issue in its storage detection troubleshooting guidance.
Choose a drive that fits your system
2.5-inch SATA SSD
Confirm that the PC has an available SATA data port on the motherboard and a SATA power connector from the power supply. Installation generally involves connecting both; a free drive bay or mounting point may also be needed.

M.2 SSD
Confirm the socket supports the drive’s interface—SATA or PCIe/NVMe—and its physical length. Check the manual for any shared-port limitations, required standoff position, or heatsink instructions. An M.2 SSD that fits physically may still use an unsupported interface.
Install the SSD safely
-
Shut down the PC and follow the computer or motherboard maker’s safety instructions before opening the case. Installation details vary by system.

Close the system and start Windows. If the drive does not appear, check its connections and confirm that the selected SATA port has not been disabled by an M.2 installation. Consult the PC or motherboard manual for model-specific detection steps.
Initialize and format the new drive in Windows
A newly connected SSD may not appear in File Explorer until it has been initialized and given a volume and drive letter. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Disk Management for this setup; Microsoft’s Disk Management instructions describe the available actions.

In the disk’s unallocated space, create a new simple volume, format it, and assign a drive letter as appropriate.
Take care to select the new SSD before formatting. Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data on the selected volume.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a second SSD can—and cannot—do
A second SSD adds storage capacity and lets you keep files or applications on a separate volume. Installing one does not by itself guarantee faster performance: results depend on the drives, their interfaces, the rest of the system, the workload, and how the drives are configured. There is no universal speed gain to expect simply from having two SSDs.

Windows Storage Spaces is a separate configuration for pooling drives. Microsoft says it requires at least two extra drives in addition to the Windows drive; its options include simple spaces with no resiliency and mirror or parity spaces that change how data is stored.
