Yes. AVG lists AVG AntiVirus FREE 26.x as compatible with Windows 11 on supported PCs. Before installing, check that your device meets AVG’s requirements and is not running Windows 11 in S mode. Windows 11 also includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turned on.
What AVG AntiVirus FREE requires on Windows 11
AVG’s requirements page lists these minimums for AVG AntiVirus FREE 26.x:
- A Windows-compatible PC with an Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 processor, or newer, that supports SSE3.
- At least 1 GB of RAM.
- At least 2 GB of free disk space.
- An internet connection to download and activate the application and maintain program and antivirus database updates.
- Windows 11, subject to the stated edition and device exceptions.
AVG lists Windows 11 ARM64 support, with exceptions for Mixed Reality and IoT editions. On Windows 11 on ARM, AVG says Boot Time Scan and Rescue Disk are unavailable. Because AVG’s installation-preparation instructions also discuss x86 processors, check the current system requirements for your device rather than assuming every ARM configuration supports every feature.

AVG advises updating Windows and removing other third-party security software before installing. Use AVG’s Windows installer on a standard Windows 11 installation:

- Download the AVG AntiVirus setup file from AVG.
- Open the downloaded file as an administrator.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, approve it to let setup make changes.
- Follow the installer prompts to complete setup. Restart the PC if prompted; AVG says some components may not function fully until after a restart.

What the free version includes—and what it does not
AVG describes AntiVirus FREE as including real-time detection of viruses, malware, spyware, and other threats. AVG says Smart Scan checks for malware as well as issues such as vulnerable software, bad browser add-ons, poor search engines, network problems, and performance issues. These are AVG’s descriptions of its features, not independent test results or a guarantee that every threat or issue will be detected.

AVG distinguishes the free app from AVG Internet Security, which it describes as adding premium features to the free features. AVG Secure VPN and TuneUp may appear in the app, but require separate paid subscriptions. AVG says an Internet Security trial requires payment details and starts a paid subscription unless cancelled before the trial ends. Check the offer and terms shown during signup before starting a trial.

Do you need AVG if Windows 11 already has Defender?
Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turned on, so do not expect both antivirus engines to remain active at the same time. After AVG setup, check Windows Security to see which antivirus provider is active. You can use the protection already included with Windows or choose AVG; the information here does not establish that one is more effective than the other.

Can you install AVG in Windows 11 S mode?
Not with the standard AVG installer while the PC remains in S mode. Microsoft says S mode restricts app installation to Microsoft Store apps and identifies the built-in Windows security solution as the compatible antivirus. If you want to use AVG’s standard Windows installer, first check Microsoft’s S mode guidance and the implications of switching out of S mode; do not assume the installer will work while S mode is enabled.

How AVG AntiVirus FREE activation works
AVG says AntiVirus FREE activates automatically after installation. Its support instructions describe a one-year renewal procedure, but the page is marked for version 23.x. If the current app behaves differently, follow the activation status and instructions shown in the app or AVG’s current support guidance rather than relying on an older version-specific procedure.
