Yes. A screenshot can be inserted as an image on a page in an existing PDF. The most direct method is Adobe Acrobat desktop: open the file, choose Edit > Image > Choose image, select the screenshot, and click where it belongs. You can then resize, move, rotate, scale, or adjust opacity. If you only need to create a new PDF, Microsoft Word or Google Docs can place the image and export the document as a PDF instead.

How to add a screenshot to an existing PDF in Adobe Acrobat
These steps follow Adobe’s desktop instructions updated November 5, 2025. Menu wording can differ slightly between Acrobat releases.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop.
- Select Edit in the toolbar or the All tools pane.
- In the Edit pane, choose Image, then Choose image.
- Browse to the screenshot file (such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, if accepted by your Acrobat build) and select it.
- Click the location on the PDF page where the image should start. Acrobat places the screenshot as page content.
- Drag a corner or side handle on the bounding box to change its size. Drag inside the box to move it.
Use Acrobat’s image controls when available to set scale, rotation, or opacity. Keep the original proportions while resizing if you want to avoid stretching text or diagrams. To place the screenshot on another page, select that page in the page thumbnails before inserting, or cut and paste the image after insertion.
Make the screenshot readable
- Use the highest-resolution capture available; enlarging a small screenshot makes text blurry.
- Leave margins around the image so it does not overlap page numbers, headers, or existing text.
- For a long web page, use a full-page capture or split it across pages rather than shrinking everything to illegible size.
- Check the result at 100% zoom before saving and print-preview it if the PDF will be printed.
Save a separate copy
Use File > Save As and give the edited document a new name. This preserves the untouched source and makes it easier to recover if the image is misplaced or the file becomes too large.

Can you paste a screenshot directly into a PDF?
Yes, when the screenshot is on the clipboard. Acrobat documents a clipboard workflow under Organize Pages > From clipboard. Copy the image from your screenshot utility or another application, open Acrobat, choose that command, and follow the placement prompts. The exact result can depend on the Acrobat version and whether the clipboard contains an image or another format. If Acrobat does not offer the command, save the capture as a PNG or JPEG and use Edit > Image > Choose image instead.
Insert a screenshot with Acrobat on a phone
Acrobat mobile can add an image captured with the device camera, then let you resize, rotate, or crop it directly in the PDF. Adobe states that this image feature requires an Acrobat subscription, and labels can vary by mobile release.
- Open the PDF in the Acrobat mobile app.
- Use the add-image or edit control and choose the camera option.
- Take the photo, confirm it, and place it on the target page.
- Resize, rotate, or crop the image with the on-screen controls.
- Save a copy or upload the edited PDF according to your normal Acrobat workflow.
A camera capture is useful for a physical screen or document, but a native screenshot file is normally sharper for software interfaces.
Use Microsoft Word as an intermediary
Word is useful when you are making a new PDF rather than modifying an existing one. It can capture an open window or a selected screen clipping, and it can insert a saved image.

- Open a blank or existing Word document.
- For a new capture, choose Insert > Screenshot, then select an available window or Screen Clipping. For an existing file, choose Insert > Pictures > This Device and select the screenshot.
- Drag the image handles to size it, or use Word’s picture layout controls to position it with text.
- When the document is ready, use Word’s Save as or Export to PDF command. The precise label depends on your Word version.
This creates a fresh PDF containing the Word document. It does not add the screenshot to the original PDF’s page structure. If the source PDF has forms, links, bookmarks, signatures, or precise pagination that must remain intact, use a PDF editor instead.
Use Google Docs as an intermediary
Google Docs can place an image when you are preparing a new document for PDF export. Choose Insert > Image and select an image from your computer, Drive, Photos, camera, or a URL. You can also drag an image into the document or paste it from the clipboard. Resize and position it, then use the document’s download or export option to create a PDF.
Google Docs is not presented as an in-place PDF editor in its image-help workflow. Importing an existing PDF and exporting it again can change line wrapping, fonts, page breaks, annotations, or form behavior, so inspect every page before distributing the result.

Control image quality, size, and PDF file weight
Resolution and scaling
A screenshot’s pixel dimensions determine how much detail survives insertion. Retina or high-density captures contain more pixels; they also increase the PDF size. If the PDF is for on-screen reading, match the image width to the intended page display instead of inserting an enormous file and shrinking it.

Compression
PNG preserves crisp interface text and lines but can be large. JPEG is smaller for photographic content but can introduce artifacts around text. WebP can be compact where the receiving application supports it. If Acrobat’s optimization tools are available, make a copy first and verify that small labels remain readable after compression.

Transparency and backgrounds
A transparent screenshot or image can reveal page content underneath. Use a solid background when the image must remain legible on varied PDF pages, and check how transparency renders in print and in other PDF viewers.

The image option is missing
Confirm that you opened the desktop Acrobat editing tool rather than a browser preview or Reader-only interface. If editing is unavailable, save the screenshot and use Word or Google Docs to make a new PDF, or obtain a PDF editor that supports image insertion.
The screenshot is blurry
Do not enlarge a low-resolution capture. Retake it at a larger viewport or higher device scale, or use the original image instead of a copied thumbnail. Keep text at a readable size on the PDF page.
The image lands on the wrong page
Select the intended page in the thumbnail pane before inserting. If it is already placed, use the selection box to move it, or cut and insert it again after selecting the correct page.

The PDF becomes too large
Reduce the screenshot dimensions, choose an appropriate image format, and use PDF optimization on a copy. Remove unused pages or duplicate images only after checking that no required content is lost.
Clipboard paste does not work
Clipboard contents may be unavailable to Acrobat or may not be recognized as an image. Save the capture as a file and use Edit > Image > Choose image.
Text or links underneath cannot be selected
An inserted screenshot is a separate image layer; it does not become editable PDF text. Keep the original text layer when editing in Acrobat. Rebuilding the document through Word or Google Docs can alter links, forms, and layout.

Adobe documents the camera-image feature as subscription-gated. Use the desktop workflow, create a new PDF through Word or Google Docs, or use an editor whose plan includes image insertion.
Before you send the edited PDF
- Open the saved copy in a second PDF viewer and check every page.
- Zoom to 100% and inspect fine text, arrows, and screenshots of dialogs.
- Confirm that the image does not cover signatures, form fields, links, or required disclosures.
- Test printing if the recipient needs paper output.
- Check file permissions and remove sensitive information from the screenshot before sharing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I insert a screenshot into a password-protected PDF?
Only if the document permissions and password allow editing. Unlock or obtain an editable copy first; do not attempt to bypass security controls.
Will inserting a screenshot make its text searchable?
No. It remains an image. Run OCR afterward if your PDF editor supports it and accuracy is acceptable.
Can I add several screenshots to one PDF?
Yes. Repeat the image-insertion command on each target page, or place multiple images in Word or Google Docs before exporting a new PDF.
