Yes—you can play games on a Chromebook, but the right method depends on the device and game. Options include Android games from Google Play on supported models, browser games, selected local Steam games through Steam for Chromebook (Beta), and PC games streamed through services such as GeForce NOW. None makes every Chromebook compatible with every game.
Choose how you want to play
| Route | Where the game runs | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | On the Chromebook, as an Android app | Whether the Chromebook supports Google Play and the specific game works on it |
| Steam for Chromebook (Beta) | Locally on select Chromebooks | Minimum hardware, supported-device list, and the game’s availability and performance |
| Cloud gaming | On a remote service, streamed to the Chromebook | Internet speed and latency, service compatibility, and game availability |
| Browser games | In a web browser | The game’s browser and input requirements |
These options are not interchangeable. Android and local Steam games use the Chromebook’s hardware; cloud gaming relies more heavily on the network and the service’s catalog. A game may also require its own account, purchase, or service membership.
Play Android games from Google Play
Google Play is available on some Chromebooks, not all. Update ChromeOS, then open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that setting is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. On a supported device, check the individual game: some Android apps do not work with some Chromebook models. Google’s Chromebook game recommendations include Asphalt 9, Roblox, and Stardew Valley. Google’s guide to using Android apps on Chromebooks explains availability and setup.

Controls can be different from a phone. Some games support keyboard-and-mouse mapping; where available, open the game overlay with Ctrl+8 to edit controls. Support depends on the game, so verify its input options before relying on a keyboard or mouse.

Install local Steam games only on eligible Chromebooks
Google offers Steam for Chromebook (Beta) on select devices. Its published minimums are an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and at least 128 GB of storage. Meeting those specifications alone does not guarantee eligibility: Google also limits the beta to supported devices.
To check, search the Launcher for Steam installer. Google says that if it does not appear, the Chromebook does not meet the beta requirements. Before installing, check Google’s supported-device list and games tested on minimum-spec devices.

The beta remains in development. Google notes that it has limitations, known bugs, performance issues, and effects on title availability. For a demanding game, lowering resolution or graphics settings and closing background apps may help. Use the Chromebook’s Steam installer flow; Google advises against installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store because that can cause performance issues. Steam being available on a Chromebook does not mean the full Windows Steam catalog runs natively.
Stream PC games with GeForce NOW
With cloud gaming, the game runs on a remote service and video is streamed to the Chromebook. That can make some PC games accessible without installing them locally, but it does not remove the need for a compatible service, an available game, and a reliable connection.

NVIDIA says GeForce NOW works on most Chromebooks with at least 4 GB of RAM and Chrome 77 or later. Its published network targets are at least 15 Mbps for 720p at 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS, with latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router. These are service requirements, not a guarantee that a connection at the stated speed will feel smooth. Chromebook 1600p and 120 FPS streaming features require GeForce NOW Ultimate, according to NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements.
Check that the game you want is offered by GeForce NOW and that you have any required account or membership. NVIDIA lists Xbox and PlayStation controllers for GeForce NOW on ChromeOS; game and connection support still vary.

Check compatibility before you start
- Identify the Chromebook and the game. Find the device model, then confirm the game supports the platform and device before buying a game or accessory.
- For Android games, check Google Play. Update ChromeOS and look for Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. Confirm the specific title is available and supports the controls you plan to use. A school or work administrator may block Play Store access; see Google’s guidance for administrators managing Android apps.
- For local Steam, check the beta. Confirm the processor, RAM, and storage meet Google’s minimums, search the Launcher for Steam installer, and consult Google’s supported-device and game lists. Install through that Chromebook flow if eligible.
- For cloud gaming, check the connection and catalog. Compare your connection with NVIDIA’s speed and latency thresholds, use Chrome, and prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when practical. Verify game availability and any account or membership requirements.
- Choose a controller only if you need one. Google lists gaming controllers among Chromebook-compatible peripherals and recommends looking for Works With Chromebook certification. NVIDIA documents Xbox and PlayStation controller support for GeForce NOW on ChromeOS. Check the controller’s connection method and compatibility with your device, service, and game before purchase.
What may not work
- Google Play games on every Chromebook: Android app support is limited to some models, and a particular app may still be incompatible.
- Local Steam installation on every Chromebook: the beta requires minimum hardware and a supported device; the Steam installer’s absence indicates the device does not meet its requirements.
- Every PC game, or consistently smooth performance: Steam beta title availability and performance are limited, while cloud play depends on the service catalog and network conditions.
- Game installation on every managed device: school or work administrators can restrict Play Store and app access.
Frequently asked practical details
For many players, browser or Android games are the simplest starting point if the Chromebook supports them. Local Steam is an option only for eligible models, and cloud gaming is worth considering when the desired title is supported and the connection meets the service’s needs. A controller is optional: keyboard and mouse may suit some games, while others work better with a compatible controller.
