Yes, you can erase a Google-locked Android phone, but a factory reset does not bypass Google Account verification. After the reset, setup may still ask you to sign in with a Google Account previously added to the device. If you cannot provide that account, use Google Account recovery rather than resetting the phone again.

What “Google-locked” means

The phrase can describe different problems, and the right fix depends on which one you have:

  • Forgotten screen PIN, pattern, or password: You cannot unlock the screen. A reset may erase the phone, but it also deletes local data.
  • Forgotten Google Account password or username: The issue is signing in to the account. Use Google Account recovery.
  • Setup asks for an account previously used on the phone: This is Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) verification. A reset may erase the device without removing this requirement.

Erasing the phone addresses its stored data and screen access; it does not restore access to a Google Account or prove ownership during setup.

What a factory reset does—and does not do

A factory reset erases data stored locally on the phone. Data backed up to a Google Account may be available to restore after you sign in, but a reset does not guarantee that a backup exists.

Google says that, in most cases, resetting by another method—such as using Recovery while a Google Account is on the phone—triggers FRP. The phone can therefore be wiped and still require the previously associated account during setup. Repeating the reset is not a way around that verification.

Before you reset the phone

  1. Identify the problem. Decide whether you are locked out of the screen, cannot sign in to the Google Account, or are facing an account-verification screen after a reset.
  2. Check your account credentials. If you can still access the phone, confirm which Google Account is on it. Where possible, verify that you can sign in to that account on another device before erasing the phone.
  3. Back up anything important. A reset erases local data. Make sure any information you need is backed up or synced before proceeding, if you can still access it.
  4. Wait if you recently changed your password. Google advises waiting 24 hours after a Google Account password change before factory resetting the phone.

How to erase a locked Android phone

Use the manufacturer’s button instructions

If you cannot unlock the screen, Google says a reset using the phone’s power and volume buttons may be possible. The exact button sequence varies by model, so follow the instructions from the phone’s manufacturer rather than assuming one combination works for every Android device. See Google’s locked Android device erase guidance and contact the manufacturer for model-specific steps.

Erase it remotely, if eligible

A remote erase is available only if the device meets Google’s requirements: it has power and an internet connection, is signed in to a Google Account, has Find Hub enabled, and is visible on Google Play. If any requirement is missing, remote erasure may not be available. Google explains the options in its Android factory reset instructions.

Both methods erase data. Neither is a supported method for bypassing the Google Account verification that may appear when you set up the phone again.

If setup asks for the previous Google Account

Sign in with a Google Account that was previously added and synced on the device, following the prompts on the setup screen. If you have forgotten the account details or cannot pass verification, use Google’s account recovery process. Available recovery options depend on what you previously configured. For 2-Step Verification, Google lists possible alternatives such as a trusted signed-in phone, another registered phone number, a saved backup code, a security key, or a passkey; see its 2-Step Verification recovery guidance.

Google says it does not work with services that claim to provide account or password support. Do not give anyone your password or verification codes, and do not pay a service that promises to remove account verification.

For a work- or school-managed phone

Contact the organization’s IT administrator instead of trying additional resets. Android Enterprise allows administrators to configure Enterprise Factory Reset Protection (EFRP) for company-owned devices. The administrator can advise what access or setup procedure applies. If a device is already FRP-locked and EFRP was not configured, Android Enterprise advises contacting the manufacturer for help.
