What makes a French manicure work on short nails?

- Prepare the nails. Start with clean nails and shape them evenly. Apply a base coat if your polish system calls for one.
- Apply the sheer base. Paint on a sheer pink or nude shade and let it dry according to the product directions.
- Paint a narrow tip. Follow the natural edge of each nail with a thin line of white or another tip color. A fine liner brush can make the line easier to control. Keep the width consistent across nails where their shapes allow.
- Refine and clean up. Correct uneven edges or stray polish before sealing the manicure.
- Apply top coat. Seal the color with top coat and allow the manicure to dry fully.
This follows the general sequence in Essie’s brand tutorial: preparation, sheer color, tip, cleanup, sealing, and optional personalization. Product instructions can differ, so follow the directions for the polish you use.

Can you use gel polish instead?
Yes, but gel has a product-specific application and curing process. OPI’s GELement tutorial demonstrates prep, thin layers of base and neutral pink, white tip color, and a no-wipe top coat. That system’s directions specify curing each layer for 30 seconds with its LED lamp; this is not a universal gel curing time.
OPI’s professional GelColor tutorial also describes thin coats, capping the free edge, shaping the smile line with a detail brush, cleansing gel residue, and applying cuticle oil. Use the cure times and lamp specified for your own gel products rather than transferring another brand’s instructions.
