Fingerprint ridge patterns can support a statistical estimate of the sex category associated with a print, but they cannot determine an individual’s sex with certainty from an ordinary fingerprint image. Research finds average differences in ridge density and breadth between study groups, yet those measurements overlap and results depend on the sample and method.
What fingerprint studies measure
Friction ridges are the raised lines that form a fingerprint. Researchers have examined ridge density—the number of ridges within a defined area—as well as ridge breadth, ridge counts, finger breadth and fingertip area. On average, women in the cited studies tended to have finer ridges or higher ridge density, while men tended to have broader ridges. These are group-level tendencies, not rules that reliably identify an individual.
The distributions overlap: a measurement associated with one group can also occur in the other. Body size may contribute to that overlap. In a study of 500 participants, weight and stature, and to a lesser degree body mass index, correlated with ridge breadth.

These results come from different samples, measurements and statistical procedures, so they should not be treated as a direct head-to-head comparison or a universal accuracy rate.

Each percentage describes classification performance reported for that study’s participants, measurements and statistical procedure. It is not the probability that a particular fingerprint has been correctly classified, a pooled estimate across studies, or a guaranteed casework success rate. The studies do not establish that their results transfer to every ancestry, age, digit, print quality or latent-print situation.
Sex estimation is not fingerprint identification
Morphology-based sex estimation uses statistical features such as ridge density or breadth to estimate a likely category. Fingerprint identification is a separate task: it compares friction-ridge detail to assess whether impressions may share a source. A sex estimate does not identify the person who left a print, and ridge measurements should not be presented as proof of an individual’s sex.

The cited studies establish research findings, not an operational standard for using ridge morphology as a stand-alone forensic conclusion. A careful account should name the measured feature, study population and method, and describe the outcome as an estimate or a classification within that sample.
A different approach: testing cells in fingerprint residue
A 2018 paper in Analytical Methods describes a proof-of-principle laboratory approach using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to target specific sequences on X and Y chromosomes in cells left in fingermark residue. The authors reported that they could establish male and female nucleated cells in the tested depositions; powder dusting and gelatin lifting did not prevent the method in their experiments. This examines biological material, not visible ridge patterns, and the paper does not establish routine casework availability. It also notes that fingermarks often contain too little recoverable DNA for successful DNA profiling. Read the paper in Analytical Methods.

Can a consumer app or scanner determine sex from a print?
The cited studies do not validate a consumer product as a reliable way to determine sex from a fingerprint. A phone photo or scanner may capture ridge patterns, but that alone does not resolve the limits of overlapping group measurements or show that a study’s method applies to the person or print in question.
