What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, in some configurations—but not on a mapped drive letter. SQL Server 2012 and later can store Database Engine database files on an SMB file share using a supported UNC path such as \ServerNameShareName. That is different from using a mapped drive such as Z:, which Microsoft lists as unsupported. Even with a supported UNC path, the file server and network must meet SQL Server’s storage and reliability requirements.
Mapped drive or UNC share: which one can SQL Server use?
A mapped drive letter is a shortcut to a network location in a particular Windows logon context. SQL Server runs as a service, so a drive mapping visible in an administrator’s session may not be available to the service. More importantly, Microsoft explicitly lists mapped network drives among the unsupported path formats for SQL Server SMB database storage.
For a documented SMB configuration, specify the share directly as a UNC path, for example \ServerNameShareName or \ServerNameShareName. Microsoft excludes loopback paths, administrative shares such as \servernamex$, and other unsupported UNC formats. See Microsoft’s SMB fileshare installation guidance.
What SQL Server supports on SMB storage
Microsoft’s SMB guidance covers SQL Server 2012 and later Database Engine installations, including standalone and failover cluster installations. It applies to user and system database files and lists database creation and alteration, restore statements, and backup operations as supported SMB-share operations. This establishes that SMB storage is a documented option; it does not mean every share, NAS, or network setup is suitable.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the documentation for the SQL Server version and component you are deploying. Do not extend the Database Engine guidance to other SQL Server components: for example, SQL Server 2025’s requirements state that SMB storage is not supported for Analysis Services data files.
Configure the share and service permissions
SQL Server accesses remote database files under service identities, not under the interactive user who created a drive mapping. Before creating or restoring databases to the share, configure access for the relevant services and setup account.

- Grant the SQL Server Database Engine service account and, where applicable, the SQL Server Agent service account full control on both the SMB share and its underlying NTFS folders. Restrict those rights to the required service accounts and administrators.
- For remote storage, Microsoft recommends a domain service account. If SQL Server uses a system account, grant access to the computer account on the file server; virtual accounts also use machine-account permissions for remote access.
- Ensure the account running SQL Server Setup has the permissions required by the setup process.
- Configure remote authentication so the service identity can authenticate to the file server. A successful path test in an administrator’s session alone does not prove the SQL Server service can access the share.
Microsoft’s SMB storage guidance describes the account and access requirements.
Confirm the storage can safely handle database I/O
A UNC path that SQL Server can open is not, by itself, proof that the storage configuration is supported or safe for a workload. Database files rely on correct write ordering and write-through behavior. Microsoft warns that network or NAS storage that fails to honor those guarantees can cause partial or total data loss or corruption after a failure. Its general guidance recommends local disk subsystems or SANs because network storage can add integrity and performance risks.

All I/O to files on an SMB share travels across the network. Assess whether the network and file server can sustain the workload’s bandwidth and I/O needs, and what happens if connectivity or the share becomes unavailable. Microsoft warns that interruptions can lead to delays or I/O failures. For mission-critical workloads, its SMB guidance advises redundant networking and storage and SMB 3.0 continuous availability. These measures do not replace validating the storage system’s guarantees and recovery behavior. Read Microsoft’s support guidance for network database files alongside the SMB configuration requirements.
Local disk, SAN, or SMB share?
| Storage choice | What the guidance establishes | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Local disk | Microsoft recommends local disk subsystems in its general network-file guidance. | Confirm capacity, performance, resilience, and recovery meet the workload’s needs. |
| SAN | Microsoft recommends SAN storage as an alternative to network database files. | Validate the specific SAN configuration and its write guarantees, performance, and recovery design. |
| SMB file share | A supported UNC-based SMB configuration is documented for SQL Server 2012 and later Database Engine files, subject to the requirements above. | Validate SQL Server version and component, permissions, write ordering and write-through, network capacity, availability, and operational recovery. The documentation does not establish that an unspecified NAS or share is suitable. |
Creating a database on the share
Once the share, service identities, and storage behavior have been validated, use the UNC path—not a mapped letter—in the database file specifications. For example, a database creation statement can specify file paths under \ServerNameShareName. The exact statement depends on the database’s file layout and your deployment standards; Microsoft lists CREATE DATABASE and ALTER DATABASE among the SMB-supported operations.

For an existing database, Microsoft also lists restore as a supported operation. Be aware that its SMB article identifies a possible permissions issue when reattaching a database after detaching one on network-attached storage, so include that case in operational planning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Database files and backup files are different cases
Storing live database files on an SMB share is a storage configuration for the running Database Engine. Writing a backup file to a share is a separate operation. Microsoft’s backup-device documentation shows using a fully qualified UNC filename for a backup or restore file; that does not make a mapped drive an acceptable path for live database files. See Backup Devices (SQL Server) for the backup-path syntax.
