You can create Windows 11 26H2 installation media, but Microsoft’s media instructions do not provide a supported bypass for an unsupported PC or guarantee that Windows will install or keep receiving updates on it. Microsoft says installing on hardware below the minimum requirements is not recommended; compatibility problems may result, and the PC will not be supported or entitled to updates. Check the current release information and your PC maker’s compatibility and driver guidance before deciding whether to proceed.
What Microsoft’s guidance means for an unsupported PC
Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page identifies version 26H2 as the current release. It explains how to make installation media for a clean install or reinstall, but those general instructions are not an endorsement of installing on hardware that does not meet the requirements.
Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “Installing Windows 11 media on a PC that does not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues.” Microsoft also says such a PC will no longer be supported or entitled to updates, and damage caused by incompatibility is not covered by the manufacturer warranty. These are Microsoft’s stated risks, not a prediction that every unsupported installation will fail in a particular way.

Check 26H2 release information first
Microsoft’s release-health page says general availability began September 29, 2026. The rollout is phased for eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices with “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” enabled. That rollout information concerns eligible devices; it does not establish that an unsupported PC is eligible or compatible.
As of September 29, 2026, Microsoft listed three mitigated issues: some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices failing to start or produce sound after a September update; a domain trust relationship issue affecting some domain-joined devices; and reports of a black screen or desktop-loading problems in some virtual desktop environments. These are general release-health reports, not evidence that unsupported hardware will encounter any one of them. Check the current release-health information before installation because issue status can change.

Check the PC and your installation prerequisites
Treat the hardware figures as a baseline, not proof of compatibility
Microsoft’s 2021 minimum hardware requirements document lists a 1 GHz processor with two or more cores, 4 GB of system memory, and 64 GB of storage. It also says processor generation and model must be checked against Microsoft’s supported processor list. Because that document is from 2021 and does not determine 26H2 compatibility for an individual PC, meeting those figures alone does not show that a machine is supported.

Microsoft says you need a license to install Windows 11, or a Windows 10 device that qualifies for an upgrade. Check your PC manufacturer’s website for driver and hardware compatibility information before you start. A Windows 11 license or a qualifying Windows 10 upgrade does not itself make unsupported hardware supported.

Back up before changing anything
Save your work and back up the PC before installation, as Microsoft recommends. A clean install can disrupt access to the existing setup, so do not begin unless you have copies of files you need and a way to recover them.
Choose installation media
Microsoft describes two media options. Use the one that matches the equipment you have; the media choice does not bypass hardware requirements or change Microsoft’s support position.

Prepare and boot the installation media
- Review release health. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 release-health information for the current 26H2 status and known issues.
- Back up your files and work. Confirm that important files are saved somewhere other than the PC you plan to install Windows on.
- Check license and manufacturer guidance. Confirm your license or qualifying upgrade situation, then review the PC maker’s driver and compatibility advice for your model.
- Create the media. Follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 download-page instructions to create a USB installer or use the ISO/DVD route. For USB, select a blank drive of at least 8 GB and verify that it contains nothing you need before using the creation tool.
- Start the PC from the media. Use the PC manufacturer’s instructions for booting from USB or DVD; the key or firmware menu varies by model. Follow Windows Setup’s prompts for a clean install. Microsoft’s general media instructions do not supply a supported hardware-requirement bypass.
- Restore the normal boot order if needed. If you changed boot order and the installer starts again after setup, Microsoft says you may need to change the boot order back so the PC starts from its usual drive.
What to do if setup will not proceed
If Setup blocks installation because the PC does not meet requirements, the official guidance covered here does not verify a supported way around that check. Do not infer from successful media creation—or from another PC’s result—that this machine will install, work reliably, or receive updates. Recheck the manufacturer’s guidance and consider staying on an operating system that the PC supports rather than relying on an unverified workaround.

If installation completes but a device does not work as expected, consult the PC maker’s driver guidance and Microsoft’s current release-health information. The available official information does not establish which issue, if any, a particular unsupported PC will encounter.
