No—not as a normal user setting. A Samsung phone’s IMEI is a manufacturer-assigned device identifier, not a number you should try to edit. The legal consequences of intentional alteration depend on where you live: India’s government guidance says it is unlawful for anyone other than the manufacturer to alter an IMEI, but that does not establish a worldwide rule. If your IMEI is missing, does not match your records, or your phone has lost service, contact your carrier or Samsung-authorized support instead of trying to change it.
What an IMEI does—and why a Samsung may show two
An IMEI identifies mobile equipment on cellular networks. Samsung describes it as a 15-digit number. Many newer dual-SIM Galaxy models have two IMEIs, so seeing two identifiers is not, by itself, evidence of tampering. Samsung support: Where to check IMEI, Model Code & Serial Number.
Samsung’s support guidance says you can check the IMEI in the phone’s settings or by dialing *#06#. Compare the displayed identifier with the phone’s box or purchase documents if you are checking a discrepancy.
Can you change a Galaxy IMEI?
The IMEI is intended to remain unique and stable after manufacture; it is not an ordinary personalization option. India’s Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) says an IMEI should not change after the device’s final production process. Samsung describes Knox security as using a hardware-rooted chain of trust and technologies intended to detect and prevent tampering. CEIR: IMEI guidance · Samsung Knox security principles.

That does not support a promise that a particular Samsung model can be altered, nor is attempting it a safe fix for a blocked, damaged, or incorrectly reported phone. An identifier mismatch may cause network, device-registration, security, or support problems. Those are risks inferred from the documented role of network identity registers and Samsung’s tamper protections, not a claim that every mismatch produces the same outcome.
Is changing an IMEI illegal?
There is no single worldwide answer established by the sources here. Laws differ by country, so check your local telecom regulator or applicable law rather than assuming the same rule applies everywhere.

India’s official CEIR guidance says the IMEI is to be unique and should not change after final production. It describes intentional removal, obliteration, change, or alteration by anyone other than the manufacturer as unlawful under its stated framework. It also addresses possession or use of hardware or software known to be configured for that purpose. This is an India-specific statement; consult current local legal or government guidance for how it applies to your situation. CEIR IMEI guidance.

The U.S. statutory provision reviewed, 18 U.S.C. § 511, concerns motor-vehicle identification numbers; it does not establish whether changing a mobile-phone IMEI is a federal offense. Do not treat it as a phone-IMEI rule. For other countries, the legal position is not established here; check the relevant national law or telecom regulator. 18 U.S.C. § 511.

What to do if your Samsung IMEI is missing or does not match
- Check the displayed number. Open your phone’s settings or dial
*#06#, then compare the result with the box or purchase documents. If your phone supports dual SIM, account for the possibility of two IMEIs. - Ask your carrier to check service and device status. A carrier can help determine whether the issue is related to your account, the device’s network status, or a block.
- Contact Samsung support or an authorized repair center for diagnosis. In India, Samsung provides a service-center locator; contact the center to confirm it can handle your model.
- If the phone is used, review its records and local status-check options. Check purchase documentation and, where available, your country’s official or carrier device-status service. India’s CEIR describes equipment identity registers and blocking based on the IMEI a handset transmits; procedures differ elsewhere. CEIR/Sanchar Saathi: device identity registers and blocking.
- If it is lost or stolen, report it through the official route. Contact your carrier and local authorities and follow the relevant country’s reporting or blocking process. Do not try to evade a block by changing an identifier.
Could IMEI trouble affect Samsung warranty or service?
Samsung India warranty and Care materials describe limitations involving unauthorized modifications and devices whose IMEI or serial number cannot be identified. These terms vary by region, product, and plan, so it would be inaccurate to say that every alteration automatically voids every Samsung warranty. Check the policy that applies to your country and device, and ask Samsung-authorized support about the specific service issue. Samsung India warranty and Care terms.
