Usually, yes—but a returned or cancelled purchase does not necessarily cancel its EMI automatically, and early closure may carry fees. For an Indian credit-card EMI, contact the card issuer to request cancellation after a refund or to ask for foreclosure (early payoff). Get the exact amount, charges and processing timeline before paying or assuming the facility is closed. Rules depend on the issuer, EMI type and any merchant-funded offer.
First distinguish cancelling the purchase from cancelling the EMI
A merchant’s order cancellation or refund and the issuer’s cancellation of an EMI facility are separate events. Federal Bank directs cardholders with a full merchant refund to contact customer care to request EMI cancellation; YES BANK likewise says the cardholder must call customer care when an Instant EMI transaction is cancelled or fully or partially refunded. What “no-cost” means—and what it may not cover
“No-cost EMI” does not guarantee that cancellation, early closure or every related charge will cost nothing. YES BANK’s agreement describes some offers as merchant- or manufacturer-funded through an instant discount or cashback corresponding to interest subvention. It also says an EMI linked to a discount, cashback, merchant subvention, promotional pricing or another offer may not be eligible for cancellation without foreclosure charges. Cancellation windows and charges vary by issuer and EMI type
The examples below come from issuer documents checked on 2026-10-04. They are not industry-wide rules; confirm the current terms that apply to your card and booking.

How to request cancellation or early payoff
- Check the refund status. Keep the merchant’s cancellation or refund confirmation and note whether the issuer has received the credit.
- Identify the EMI booking. Ask whether it is Merchant/Instant EMI or a post-purchase conversion such as Transaction EMI; cancellation treatment can differ.
- Contact the card issuer. Ask for EMI cancellation after a refund, or request foreclosure/pre-closure if you want to pay it off early. Get a request or reference number.
- Request a written breakdown before paying. Confirm remaining principal, foreclosure fee and tax, treatment of processing fees and interest, and whether a discount, cashback or subvention will be adjusted.
- Confirm completion. Ask when instalments should stop appearing and how any amount already billed or paid will be credited. Keep the refund record, EMI reference and issuer’s written confirmation.
Do not assume an extra card payment closes the EMI
Federal Bank’s terms say that paying more than the card balance does not necessarily apply the excess to unbilled EMI instalments; it may instead create a credit balance. Request a foreclosure amount and follow the issuer’s stated process rather than relying on an overpayment to close the facility. Federal Bank EMI terms

Credit-card EMI rules are not the same as loan prepayment rules
This guidance concerns Indian credit-card merchant, Instant and transaction-conversion EMIs. If the financing is a separate consumer loan, use that loan’s agreement and applicable prepayment terms. For example, Central Bank of India publishes no-prepayment-charge provisions for specified non-business loans to individuals; those provisions do not establish the rules for a credit-card EMI.
